As some of you already know, my mama Beverly, began her battle against breast cancer in 2023. The diagnosis was aggressive. She underwent an intense but successful lumpectomy and then opted for chemo and radiation to be sure it was gone. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy caused SO many of the worst and most unlikely side effects that even her doctors decided to stop after the second of four infusions and discouraged any future chemo use. Praise the Lord that she regained her muscle and strength (and ability to walk) after those horrible weeks. She went on to complete the radiation as planned by January 2024. 2024 was a year filled mostly with relief and happy trips to see her grandkids.
This year in April 2025, bloodwork showed that her cancer markers were high. After several scans and tests, it was found that what was originally breast cancer had now metastasized in her liver. Again, the tumor was very large and very fast-growing. Her oncologist suggested some oral drug treatments that would not be curative and she did not exude the positive attitude we wish she would have (that's putting it nicely).
My parents began searching for alternative treatments and came across a clinic in Texas known for its impressive cancer treatment research as well as their patients' promising testimonials. Essentially, they use a combination of anti-cancer cell and anti-tumor growth compounds in a steady IV form to specifically target cancer causing cell mutations. This treatment has shown little to no side effects as it targets cancer cells only!
So, after quickly applying and being accepted by the clinic, my parents spent the last two weeks of July in Texas starting the treatment and learning how to care for the IV and keep it going. In theory, this treatment should last up to a year and require several trips to Texas as well as many PET scans, MRI scans, CT scans, and blood draws.
So far, in the first couple weeks on the IV, she is doing well aside from some big pain around her liver, which she had already come to expect, and frequent fatigue.
If you know and love my mama, then you know how hard it is for her to ask for help. In her own words, "I'm the helper, I don't know how I could even ask for help with this." Through all of this, all she wants is to be able to enjoy living to see her grandbabies grow up and to know how to treat whatever hereditary component may be present.
If you’ve read this far, THANK YOU. Here’s how you can help if you feel so led:
1. Through prayer! Our God is an awesome God who can use all things for His glory, even if the devil meant it for evil. Our God is so big, so strong, and so mighty. There is nothing our God cannot do. My mom’s unwavering and calm faith has been an encouragement to me and to every doctor, nurse, friend, and stranger who my mom has crossed paths with. He is our hope and our strength.
2. Financially! These treatments are only available through the “Right to Try” law. That means that they are not protocol and not covered by insurance. Over the last 3 months, my parents have paid over $71,000 out of pocket.
Going forward, they expect to pay at least $17,000 per month for treatment through the clinic (expecting 12 months). They will also need to pay for travel expenses and many scans out of pocket. By this time next year, they expect to have paid at least $236,000 in medical bills.
Mom’s next scans are planned for December and we are praying that they show massive improvement.
Meals- Many have offered meals and we so appreciate it! My mom is constantly shifting her diet, so if you want to help with meals, the best options are gift cards! They appreciate Sprouts and Trader Joes grocery cards.
3. Share! My mama will accept all the prayer she can get and any donations, big or small, will ease their stress and worry.
Thank you for your prayers and for loving my mama <3
