Mike and his wife have spent the past 20+ years saving the lives of homeless animals. They founded two non-profit rescue groups and, along with other volunteers, have saved hundreds of dogs (including Betty Blue, in photo).

After two decades of helping man’s best friend (especially seniors and those with special needs) Mike and his wife now need some help themselves.

On April 9, Mike experienced multiple symptoms that were initially misdiagnosed as Bell’s Palsy. Ten days later, and after the debilitating disease had rapidly progressed to the point of chest-level paralysis, he received a correct diagnosis of Guillain–Barré syndrome (AKA GBS) .

Although Mike has been working hard to regain lost abilities and strength through intensive PT and occupational rehabilitation, he remains unable to stand, walk or feed himself. He is currently in ICU for respiratory monitoring.

Because Mike has recently experienced setbacks, regular IVIg (intravenous immunoglobulin) treatments will likely be needed for long-term disease management. Mike could also currently benefit from massage therapy (to both reduce pain and improve circulation).  Unfortunately, it is not covered by insurance.  

The recovery period for GBS can take 3-6 months or longer and the extent of recovery is unique to each patient. Meanwhile, medical bills (along with other expenses) are accruing.
