Hello everyone,
My name is Austin Macon and my brother’s name is Logan Macon. As some of you may know, our mother, Betti L. Macon passed away on August 2, 2021. We come to you today asking for kindness, generosity, and help to fund funeral expenses.
Our mother was always known as a quiet, fun, loving, strong and wise woman. She has always been a hard worker and was always willing to sacrifice anything and everything to take care of her children. When I was in middle school, she started a job at the Department of children and family (DCF) working as a diligent search specialist to reunite parents with their children. She wanted to do more to help children, so she obtained her master’s degree in psychology with a focus in behavioral analysis. She achieved dean’s list twice in the duration of her program while working and taking care of her two sons. When she graduated, she began working in education for Autistic children.
As she was advancing in her career to help autistic children, she first became ill in 2017 with the flu. As time progressed, her health declined, and she developed chronic kidney disease. She ended up losing her job due to being in and out of the hospital. As a result, she lost her health insurance and was unable to receive adequate care and was also unable to have a biopsy done to find out that she had cancer. The next year she lived unknowingly with cancer and depleted her unemployment checks and 401k to stay afloat. In 2018, she was finally diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
She is survived by her two sons, Austin, 26 and Logan Macon, 29. We were by her side from the onset of her cancer to the last day of her life. Logan, who lived in Florida with our mom when she was initially diagnosed, continued to work to pay off the outstanding bills and care for our mom. When I lived in NYC, I would send money to support my family and occasionally visit to be by my mom's side. Due to the pandemic in 2020, I was officially laid off and traveled back home to be by my mom's side and became her designated caretaker.
In March of this year, her condition became worse, and we had to seek a specialist. Her previous oncologist gave her a 30-day prognosis, but thankfully we secured a specialist at Moffitt Cancer Center. In early April, she had to stop chemo treatments and was hospitalized for emergency dialysis. She remained in the hospital and was transferred to a rehab facility. In May, she finally returned home, but her cancer grew stronger, so she was scheduled to receive intense radiation. June would be the last time she was ever home. On June 29th, her last day of radiation, she broke her leg and had to receive surgery. She spent July recovering in the hospital and on August 2nd she passed away.
My mom was a fighter. She fought for her sons, her family, and her life. Today, we ask with a heavy heart for help to celebrate her life. We are in urgent need of donations to cover the funeral expenses. As of now the funeral is estimated at $11,000 by next week. We know these times are unprecedented for all of us, but we ask if you can donate, please contribute to our mother Betti Macon’s memorial fund.
Thank you and with much love,
Betti Macon’s sons, Austin and Logan
