San Felipe is a city in Baja California, 120 miles south of Mexicali.
It is a city of about 25,000 residents on the shore of the Sea of Cortez. It survives mainly from commercial fishing and tourism. The average Mexican resident has a very small income of a few hundred dollars a month. Medical services are minimal.
A small group of American and Canadian retirees formed a group about 16 years ago that primarily helps poor seniors with food and home repairs. 13 years ago the group began providing cataract and other eye surgeries for those unable to pay for those services. To date, Better Together in Christ has done 396 cataracts and hundreds of other eye surgeries for the community.
At this time we have 57 cataracts waiting for surgery and 18 pterygium surgeries. To do these surgeries will cost $50,000 USD. In March 2024 we want to perform 44 cataract surgeries and 18 pterygium surgeries at a cost of 28,700 USD.
Unfortunately, unlike Americans, many seniors receive a tiny pension, if they receive a pension at all. They cannot afford to pay for surgery and their adult children are generally unable to help. As a result, many seniors must continue working to buy food and pay for electricity, but if they are unable to see they simply cannot work.
Any donation toward this project would be very greatly appreciated.
