Let's better the world, start a food forest!

Ik ben Sjoerd en al jaren ben ik van alles en nog wat aan het uitproberen op deze wereld. Zo heb ik veel gereisd, Bos- en Natuurbeheer gestudeerd, lange wandeltochten gemaakt naar Santiago en de Noordkaap, de 3000 km lange Yukon afgekanood met 2 vrienden en altijd weer teruggekomen in het zonnige Gouda. Ik ben nu 27 jaar oud en heb besloten iets groters te gaan beginnen. Niet alleen voor mezelf, maar ook voor de idealen waar ik voor sta en om de wereld een mooiere plek te maken.
Ik wil samen met 2 vrienden een voedselbos beginnen in Spanje.
Een voedselbos heeft dezelfde gelaagde structuur als een natuurlijk bos ,maar bestaat bijna uitsluitend uit eetbare soorten. Denk hierbij aan notenbomen, fruitbomen, bessen, klimplanten zoals kiwi's en druiven, wortelgewassen, bodembedekkers als aardbeien en verschillende (geneeskrachtige) kruiden.
Bij deze manier van landgebruik komen we tegemoet aan verschillende vraagstukken die op dit moment spelen. We produceren voedsel om de mens te voeden, we slaan CO2 op in de verschillende bomen en in de grond om onze uitstoot te compenseren, er is veel ruimte voor biodiversiteit, het bos slaat water op in natte tijden en geeft water af in droge tijden en nog veel andere voordelen voor de directe maar ook indirecte omgeving. Ook heeft deze manier van voedselproductie geen ploeg, mest en gif nodig en is het beter tegen weersextremen bestand, waardoor het duurzamer en minder arbeidsintensief is. Daarnaast wordt het een heerlijke en gezonde plek om tot rust te komen, mensen te leren over de natuur en andere manieren van voedselproductie en een biologische vijg te eten.
7 mei gaat onze zoektocht naar een geschikt stuk land beginnen. We hebben afgesproken met een local in het gebied Huesca in Noord-Spanje. Met deze persoon gaan we langs verschillende boeren in de regio die mogelijk delen van hun land willen verkopen aan ons. Vorig jaar is Bastiaan (een van de 2 vrienden) al in het gebied geweest en heeft hier al enkele stukken land bekeken en gezien dat dit de regio is waar we het beste kunnen starten. Ps: we spreken allebei Spaans.
Wij willen 10 tot 20 hectare braakliggende grond kopen en dit zal rond de 30.000 euro gaan kosten, exclusief makelaars- en juridische kosten. Zelf hebben we ongeveer 20.000 euro bij elkaar verzameld en hebben nog minstens 10.000 euro nodig om ons doel te verwezenlijken. Dit geld zal enkel besteed worden aan de aanschaf van het land. Hopelijk vinden we dat al in mei, anders zoeken we net zolang tot we het hebben gevonden.
Na de aankoop zullen we veel tijd besteden aan het observeren van het land; waar zijn de vochtige plekken, waar komt het meeste zon, welke soort bodem hebben we, etc, om een goed ontwerp te kunnen maken van de plantensoorten die overal het beste kunnen groeien. Bastiaan is hierin gespecialiseerd en ontwerpt nu al meerdere jaren voedselbossen, van Costa Rica tot in Rucphen in Nederland. Hij zal grotendeels verantwoordelijk zijn voor het ontwerp. We willen zo veel mogelijk planten zelf gaan enten en stekken om de kosten te drukken, echter zullen we hier waarschijnlijk ook nog geld voor nodig hebben waardoor alles boven de opgehaalde 10.000 geen overbodige luxe zou zijn.
Ook is het plan om op het stuk land een bescheiden (gasten)verblijf te bouwen. Dit willen we doen met (natuurlijke)materialen uit de omgeving om het zo duurzaam mogelijk te houden. Hier is uiteraard iedereen die het project steunt altijd welkom om langs te komen om lekker de handen uit de mouwen te steken, of juist om te genieten van al het moois om je heen.
Over een jaar of 7 zullen de eerste notenbomen heerlijke noten geven, de eerste appels, abrikozen en perziken hun sappige vruchten laten vallen en al die zoete bessen moeten ook opgegeten worden, de gezonde kruiden en knollen zoeken een hongerige mond en de druiven smachten ernaar om tot wijn gemaakt te worden. Nog een paar jaar later komen de walnoten en tamme kastanjes erbij, en dan wordt het elk jaar meer. Dit is waar het uiteindelijk om draait!
Zodra er genoeg oogst is kan iedereen in de buurt zich gaan voeden met onze heerlijke producten. Iedereen die langskomt kan eten van het land en het overschot kunnen we gewoon op de grond laten liggen, als verrijking van de bodem. Ook zal waarschijnlijk een deel van de oogst verkocht worden aan lokale middenstanders, zodat we van de opbrengst hiervan ons stuk land kunnen onderhouden en eventueel het bos kunnen uitbreiden.

I am Sjoerd, (Stuart, that´s how I normally introduce myself) and already for quite some years I have been wandering around the world, I have studied forest and nature conservation, I have done some long-distance hikes (To Cape North and Santiago de Compostela) and canoed the entire Yukon river with two good friends. After these adventures I always return to my hometown Gouda. Right now I am 27 years old and decided to go for something bigger than just going on holidays all the time. Not just for myself, but also for my ideals and to make this planet a bit more pretty than it is already.
Together with 2 friends I will start an actual food forest in Spain. A food forest has the same structure as a natural forest, but almost all its plants are edible. Think about big nut trees as the highest layer of the forest, smaller fruit trees beneath them, berry shrubs under the trees, vines growing into the trees, like kiwis and grapes, tubers, bulbs and rhizomes, (medicinal) herbs and ground covering plants like strawberries. Imagine, walking through one of these forests, must feel like heaven.
This type of land use gives an answer to many of today’s problems. It produces food, it stores CO2 in the trees and the soil, it provides food and shelter for a wide range of species of insects, birds, mammals, etc., that in return help with pest control and building up a fertile and healthy soil, that in turn stores water in times of excess and provides water in times of need. A food forest doesn’t need pesticides or fertilizers, nor heavy machinery for ploughing and sowing, and when the trees are past their fragile sapling stage, they don’t need any watering nor drainage, just like a real forest. We let nature do almost all the work. This makes a food forest inherently more sustainable and less labour intensive. Finally, it is an inspiring and peaceful place for relaxation and education and to have a tasty fresh-picked meal!
The 7th of May we are heading to Spain, and we will meet with a local in the valley of Medina de Pomar. This person knows many people in the area and likes our ideas and is willing to help us finding our land. Last year Bastiaan went to the area already to check out the region. He found out that this was a good region to start the food forest; the prices of land are relatively low, and annual rainfall is enough to grow a wide variety of trees.
Our goal is finding 10 to 20 hectares of barren land and this will approximatly cost 30.000 euro, with all the extra costs for a notary etc excluded. We already have 20.000 euro at the moment and we will need at least 10.000 euro more to complete our goal. This money will only be used for buying the land. Hopefully we will find this piece of land in May already, otherwise we will keep on searching until we find something.
After the purchase we will spend a lot of time observing the land; where are the moist spots? Where are the sunny parts? Where does the wind come from? How does it differ throughout the seasons? These will be some of the questions to investigate in order to make a good design for the land, because not every plant likes the same circumstances. Bastiaan knows everything about plants and making designs for edible gardens and forests. He has been designing them for multiple years already, in different regions. In Costa Rica he designed and realised a food forest, he has his own project in Rucphen (The Netherlands) right now and has designed many edible gardens in Rotterdam. So he will be responsible for this part of the project. Julius is the other friend and he is specialized in fixing (big) machines, so he will be very useful for this part. The three of us all studied Forest and Nature conservation.
The plan is also to build some kind of settlement on the land, so after working on the fields, we have a place to rest. This will also be the building where people can come and visit us, stay for the night, etc. Of course everybody that supports this project is welcome to come by and help us, or just to enjoy the beauty of this paradise.
In about 7 years, the first walnuts will give ready, apples, peaches, apricots and all kinds of other more exotic fruits will be all over the place, the juicy berries will be ready to be picked and everybody can eat as much as they want. The worst thing that can happen will be that there is too much food, but that is no problem, it will fall on the ground and adds nutrients and betters the soil. At some point we might start to sell some of the harvest to local middlemen or give it away to people that need it, but we will come back to that in the future.
Conclusively, it is a project with a lot of positive outcomes that will make the world a nicer place. help us now and pick up your crate of fruit in 7 years!
