Bethlie Paul was 10 when she arrived on humanitarian parole in San Antonio from Leogane, Haiti. Attempting to save her life after her elementary school fell in on her during the 2010 devastating Haitian earthquake, American paramedics from Medical Teams International, with the help of the international nonprofit Healing the Children, brought her to Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital for extensive surgeries and recovery.
Her mother Roselie was not allowed to travel with her, and the Foy-Spriester family served as Bethlie's host family. What was predicted to be a 2-3 week ordeal before Bethlie would return to Haiti turned into 15 joyous years, in which she eventually: welcomed her mom to join her in San Antonio; graduated from Alamo Heights High School where she was on the dance team; became an American citizen; saw her now-10-year-old brother Leo born; got her college associate's degree; and worked as a flight attendant, a bookkeeper and a nonprofit children's care specialist.
As she was healing from her injuries as a young girl with the Foy-Spriesters, Bethlie was diagnosed with lupus, which had gone undiagnosed since even before the earthquake. On Oct. 12, 2025 at University Hospital, she was surrounded by family and friends as she passed away from complications of the disease.
The family is beyond grateful for support for expenses associated with Bethlie's care and passing, as her mother Roselie Louissaint has not been able to work for many months to be at her side in the hospital. Nicole has set this fundraiser up to help manage covering care costs, some funeral expenses and ongoing bills for Roselie and family, who will receive the funds directly.
