Bethany's Smile

Our beautiful 19-year-old daughter, Bethany Raber, was born with a Retrognathic Malocclusion which affected the development of her upper and lower jaw. In reaching adulthood, it has become evident that this negatively affects her breathing, especially at nighttime, because her airway is less than half the typical size. There are other increasing difficulties that negatively affect her overall health and daily functions. It has become medically necessary to correct the structure of her jaw line for her future well-being.

All who are blessed to know Bethany, feel how she cares deeply for all of life. She has many gifts to share with the world in her own delightful way, including a beautiful smile, and a bright and intelligent presence. This corrective surgery will help support these gifts, as she makes her way into adulthood.

There is a recommended surgery plan to widen her upper jaw, bring forward her lower jaw, and make a small adjustment to the chin area. This will increase her airway by almost half, give her the ability to close her jaw typically, and improve her speaking and eating functions.

We have found a skilled local Oral Surgeon whom we are confident will bring her to the outcome of an even more beautiful smile, and much more comfort in her daily functions.

Unfortunately, all medical help plans/medical insurance view Orthognathic Surgery as cosmetic. Even though surgeons have written multiple letters explaining the necessity from a medical standpoint, she has been denied medical coverage for this surgery. There will be no help from medical insurance, so we will be left with a total out-of-pocket expense ranging from $35,000 to $50,000.
