Last year, my best friend Diego’s father, Nelson Ortega, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Ever since, he’s been fighting each and every day to stay strong, even going out to work long, full days at the helm of his landscaping business when he felt good enough to do so. That’s just him, an amazingly resilient person.
In addition to being my best friend’s father, Nelson is also our neighbor...the best anyone could possibly hope for. He’s an incredible man with inexhaustible love for his family and a concern for those around him that’s so rarely found in people these days. As hard as he works for his family, he’s never batted an eye at going out of his way for all of us, even when he never needed to, and has never asked for anything in return. I remember so many times when we’d have an especially bad blizzard during the winter, and Nelson would think nothing of snow-blowing the entire block, clearing a path for all of us to be able to get out of our driveways. He never accepted any payment, even when we absolutely insisted. He’s touched so many around him with his kindness, his generosity, and his selflessness. That’s just him. That’s who Nelson is.
We were all saddened to learn that Nelson’s condition recently worsened, increasing pressure on Diego to tend to the family business while simultaneously dealing with a devastating situation.
Diego jumped into action to take over the family business. He’s had to learn the ins and outs of being a business owner on the fly and without any training. He’s working long hours, with barely a day off, to support his family, all while caring for his father at the same time.
When I asked Diego what the hardest part about running the business was, he expressed frustrations about some of his landscaping equipment. Much of it is old and unreliable, adding layers of extra stress to an already stressful situation. Breakdowns regularly occur on the job site, costing Diego time and potential business, and most importantly, costing their family money.
With this at the forefront of my mind, I wanted to do whatever I could to make the fight a little easier. I’d like to raise $6500 for a brand new Wright Velke Hydro 32” commercial lawn mower and a Stihl BR 800 X Magnum leaf blower, both with warranties. It is extremely important for a business to have well-made, reliable equipment, and I want to be able to lift a small weight off of Diego’s shoulders. He deserves it, and so does this incredible family. Any extra money raised beyond this goal will go directly to the Ortega family for medical expenses and anything else they may need. The family is incurring a lot of expenses due to cancer, but this new equipment will help stabilize their business for the future. Every penny raised will directly benefit the family.

Putting myself in Diego’s shoes, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to take over a business, support my family and care for my loved one who is sick, all at the same time. Diego has been my best friend for twenty years. He’s an endlessly thoughtful, selfless person, just like his dad, and he’s always been there for me when I needed him. Now it’s my turn to be there for him. Please consider a donation to this amazing family.

El año pasado el padre de Diego, mi mejor amigo, supo que tenía cáncer del colon, etapa 4. Desde entonces, ha estado luchando cada día para mantenerse fuerte y guapo, hasta saliendo a trabajar todos los días que se sentía suficientemente saludable para llevar su negocio de jardinería. Ese el tipo de persona que él es, una persona que no se da por vencida.
Además de ser el padre de mi mejor amigo, Nelson es nuestro vecino, el mejor vecino que uno puede tener. Es un hombre increíble, quiere a su familia con todo su corazón y siempre se preocupa por todos alrededor de él, una cosa que no se encuentra en muchas personas ahora días. Con lo duro que él trabaja por su familia, para él no le es nada dejar lo que está haciendo para ayudar a sus vecinos, aunque uno no se lo pide y sin pedir nada de recompensa. Me acuerdo muchas veces cuando ha habido tormentas de nieve, Nelson arranca su máquina y sale a limpiar las aceras de la cuadra entera para que todos podamos salir afuera y sacar nuestros carros. Nunca ha aceptado dinero por hacerlo, aunque hemos tratado de insistir. Él nos ha emocionados a todos con su amabilidad, su generosidad y su desinterés.
Estamos todos tristes de enterarnos que su condición ha decaído mucho, poniendo más presión en Diego para mantener el negocio de la familia, a la misma vez que tiene que tratar con una situación tan devastadora.
