As many of you know, Bertha is having some medical issues. Almost a month ago we noticed that she was eating significantly less, if at all, and was dramatically losing weight. We took her to the vet last Friday and had bloodwork and xrays done. The bloodwork came back that she has very low platelets and red blood cells and that it would appear her body is not actively making any to replace the ones that are dying. The radiologist also said her spleen was enlarged, which makes sense because of its connection to blood supply and RBC. She had also lost almost 3 lbs and was getting to be dangerously underweight.
They said it is possible that it is cancer although no masses were seen on the xrays. They said it is also possible that it is Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia which is an illness that affects the blood. Either scenario is devastating. We were referred to the specialty center and were given an appointment for this Sunday to have an ultrasound, possible bone marrow tests, and likely much more in depth blood work done. Unfortunately, they called yesterday to tell me they have a COVIDoutbreak among their employees and are cancelling all upcoming appointments. This was really hard to hear because upon research of IMHA, symptoms can go from ok to fatal very quickly. They told us they would put her on the list and would call us once they begin scheduling. We are devastated to hear this as we don't want to wait much longer to have follow up testing. We made a follow up visit to her regular vet for an additional CBC blood test next Friday (On Her BIRTHDAY) so that we can make sure she isn't getting to the point of needing transfusions. We have been keeping an eye on her and giving her the appetite stimulant, which has helped. We are monitoring her for internal bleeding, pale gums, and jaundice. We are already $700 in for just the initial visit. The ultrasound can be around $600 or more as well. I can't even imagine what the additional bloodwork and possible cortisone medication will cost. If she does have cancer, she could possibly need her spleen removed. If she does have IMHA, she will have to be on Prednisone for months, maybe longer. Our hearts are devastated. She is only turning 9 next week. We don't have children and, as many of you pet owners know, she is so special to us. She has been a support animal in so many ways during so much trauma over the last 9 years. We will do whatever it takes to help her fight this. I hate to have to even ask for help, but we are staring down the tunnel of unimaginable costs and I appreciate you sharing this even if you can't donate. We will keep you all updated with any progress or diagnoses. We are actively looking for any other Vet in the area who may be able to provide her with an ultrasound sooner. We are trying to stay positive, but are obviously anxious. We love and appreciate your support. Bertha is worth fighting for!
