Bert McLeod Memoral Fund

May 19th, 1992. On that day, 27 years ago, Bert and I entered into this world together and instantly knew the blessing of having another person to share in all the wonderful joys and heartaches that the living world has to offer. We were granted a rare bond that few people get to know, and now I have the honor and privilege to carry on his legacy.
Unfortunately, my brother lost his battle with addiction on May 11th, 2019. He was found by his roommate in his dorm at Columbia University in New York City. It has been a shock to everyone who knew him, and we still struggle with the loss of such an amazing person. Bert was always hard-working and driven, and kept many of his struggles hidden from everyone- including me, his twin sister. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and received many honors from his time serving our country. He never failed to find humor in any circumstance and his intelligence and warmth always resonated with people he came across. Bert was the most morally driven person I've ever met, and wanted to become a lawyer to fight against injustices for those without a voice.
My task now is to become that voice for him. My family would like to create a fund to help others overcome the stigma associated with addiction and to help fund human rights campaigns that promote equality for all. In order to have a lasting impact, we need help creating an endowment fund so that all of the proceeds can go to carrying on Bert's passion and prevent another tragedy like ours. Some causes we hope to support are:
-Southern Poverty Law Center
-The Herren Project
-The Partnership for Drug-free Kids
-American Civil Liberties Union,
and many others.
If we're able to come up with $25,000 in funds, we can set up an endowment that would last for decades and do at least some of the good that he so desperately wanted to do. This will truly be a lasting impact. Please help us make this a reality.
