Berry Rogers' Fight Against Cancer
Hi. For those who may not know me, my name is Berry Rogers. I live in the small town of North Bend, WA (just outside of Seattle) and have lived here just over 20 years. I grew up in WV, served in the USAF in Texas and Oklahoma, graduated from both the University of Texas at Arlington and Colorado Tech Online. For the past 28 years I have been married to my wonderful wife, Glynis. We have three fabulous college-age kids (Kaitlyn, Adam, and Ben). I have always been active in volunteering in my community; from co-coaching our school's unicycle team, hosting exchange students and au pairs from around the world, starting a volunteer program for dads at my kids’ school, and most recently as Scoutmaster for my sons’ Boy Scout Troop (got ‘em to Eagle!) which has been one of my life’s true pleasures. This Spring, however, things changed dramatically with a diagnosis of Bladder Cancer.
Numerous tests and CAT/PET scans were scheduled. I tried immunotherapy which didn’t work as the cancer was too aggressive. Add to that a biopsy of my lymph nodes, removal of a kidney stone and numerous doctor visits the bills are piling up, and (to be honest) I’m expecting more in the future – especially once deductibles restart next year.
Fortunately, I am being treated at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and feel I have a fabulous team. We have an initial treatment plan of 6 rounds of chemo (which started July 2021) and which will go until mid-November.
Some of our expected costs:
• The already billed treatments/tests/prescriptions, etc.
• We are driving from North Bend -- > Seattle twice each chemo day due to the length of treatment.
• There are days where dinner just doesn’t fit in the schedule on chemo day.
• There may be co-pays for future doctor visits, prescriptions, etc.
• There will be future CAT/PET scans to track progress.
• IF the chemo is successful, then the next steps would be surgery to remove the bladder/lymph nodes. Unknown timing on this. If the chemo is not fully successful, then another round could be ordered.
• And others simply unknown at this time.
