The above picture was taken the 07th May this year when my mam rang the bell on the chemo ward for finishing her breast cancer treatment.
2019 consisted of 16 weeks chemo, two weeks in hospital with double pneumonia, a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery along with an injection every three weeks until May this year to ensure the aggressive type of cancer doesn’t come back. The treatment was extremely hard and the side effects that come from it are unimaginable on daily life both mentally and physically.
Just as we were adjusting to our ‘new normal’ life post cancer (and pandemic) mam was called for a colonoscopy two weeks ago. While doing so, her bowel was perforated removing a polyp and they found new tumour. We got the results Tuesday it’s a second cancer in her bowel. Less than three months after fighting another type of cancer.
We are absolutely heartbroken and coming to terms that we have to face the road of more surgery and treatment again.
As many of you know mam lives on her own. All savings we had were used to pay the mortgage, everyday bills and additional costs that come along with having cancer last year. She hasn’t had a car in months due to it breaking down and the mortgage has entered arrears. She had agreed to go back to full payments from October when she was planning to return to work but unfortunately now she won’t be able to return.
Mam has done so many fundraisers and helped so many charities over the years and I hope this one can help her. I hope it can take the financial stress away for the next few months and she can focus on fighting this for the second time.
I’m setting up this fundraiser because she never has and never will ask for help so I’m asking for her.
