Bernie Hanik's battle with Brain Cancer

Hello - Bernie Hanik is my beloved aunt and I have organized this fundraiser on behalf of her & our family:

Bernie was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, Stage 4 brain cancer, in May and is determined inoperable. The location of the tumor has caused both left arm and leg paralysis.

She was hospitalized in June and began Chemotherapy and Radiation treatments. In July, she was moved to a rehab facility as she requires full-time care, therapy and medical assistance while she continues her treatments.

It is hard to admit that longevity and prognosis are uncertain, as we know what google says, but Bernie is as stubborn in the best of ways and is committed to battling this progressive disease - facing it head on.

What might be even harder to admit, especially in our family, is when you can use help. The financial burden of fighting brain cancer has become unpredictably evident. Bernie stopped working around the same time as the diagnosis. Her insurance has now denied coverage of her necessary inpatient stay (appeals are on-going). The cost of her daily room needs are approximately $450 a day - not including therapy. On top of this, the facility she is currently residing in is underperforming in the treatment of their residents so the family is actively seeking alternatives facilities. The estimated overall cost of room and board are around $13-14k a month + therapy, transportation to radiation, and the treatments themselves.

We are hoping to help Bernie off-set her growing medical costs for at least 2-3 months as she continues to fight. The stress of this unprecedented diagnosis in additional financial burden within our family is daunting, but we know the power of community support and prayer.
