Bernadette's F*** Cancer Journey

Hello my name is Kim and I would like to tell you about my brave sister-in-law, Bernadette. Bernadette is a wife of 23 years to her husband, Billy. She is also a Mother of 2. Her son Billy who is 21 and currently attending Temple University, and her daughter Breanna, 18 who is a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is a Special Ed Teacher and also works a second job at a Doggie daycare and boarding facility.
Bernadette is a person who likes to plan things out and starting on December 28, 2017, was not in the plans! Their lives were sent into a whirlwind. On her yearly Mammogram there was an abnormality in her pictures. January 8, 2018, exactly 1 month after losing her Dad, which was difficult in itself and the day before her 43rd birthday, she had gone for a biopsy. It was confirmed, She had invasive ductal carcinoma, which spread into her lymph nodes. On March 22, 2018 she had bilateral mastectomy. During all of this, of course she was out of work with no pay from her 2nd job. With her very supportive husband at her side every step of the way, also didn’t get paid for the days he missed work. This definitely was a struggle. Thankfully, throughout this struggle there were family, friends, co-workers and the community to lend a helping hand.
Bernadette has recently finished her chemo, which did not allow her to work due to the side effects. Next step will be 5 ½ weeks of radiation, breast reconstruction surgery AND a hysterectomy. All which puts a damper on her plans and she will be out of work, once again. Her husband will again be at her side and will also be missing unpaid work days It’s a another struggle they cannot afford. Bernadette and Billy have powered through all of this with such positive attitudes. But still they have a long way to go.
