As many of you know, our Mom (Bernie) passed away January 29th, 2021 leaving behind her husband, Joe (Dad) of 49 years and a legacy of kindness, generosity and so much love.
Here are the major events leading up to that;
October 30th (one day after her 69th birthday) - She suffers a stroke. Doctors find a brain bleed and a golf ball-sized tumor. They successfully remove it and repair the bleed. She is paralyzed on her right side. A week later she goes into rehab and makes great progress. She is set to return home on December 28th.
December 27th - Mom experiences a seizure. She is sent to ICU and they are able to get it under control. She is sent back to rehab.
January 1st, 2021 - She suffers another stroke. She is now paralyzed on her left side. They also find another brain bleed. Being too weak to undergo another surgery, doctors tell us there is nothing they can do.
Jan 5th - Because the part of her brain that helps the body process food and water is damaged, they stop feeding her as it will cause more pain.
Jan 7th - Mom comes home to hospice care, she is unable to move but her eyes are opened and she is happy to be home. They tell us she has about two weeks to live.
Jan 29th (Three weeks and a day later) - She peacefully leaves us and goes straight into the arms of Jesus.
What we would love help with
Years ago, our Dad purchased long term care insurance for my mom and has been paying monthly. We opened a claim when she went into rehab and have been working with the insurance company ever since. This week, they found a loophole in our policy, and will not be paying the claim. Our portion of the rehab costs total $6500 for the short time she was there. To add salt to the wound, the life insurance policy that my dad had on both of them only covered accidental death and not natural causes.
Any monies donated will also be used to help Dad cover funeral costs and extra medical expenses not covered by medicare. We will also put some aside for tax purposes.
Many of you have asked if you can buy a wreath or flowers. Mom's wishes were to be cremated and brought home to wait for Dad. In lieu of flowers, we would love it if you would consider donating to her memorial fund instead, since there is currently no plot to put flowers on.
Anyone who knew her, knew that she was always so giving. She loved people so well and always made them feel important. She would never ask for help but if you needed it, she would go out of her way to help as best as she can. This is our way of giving back to her.
If you have already sent or given money to us, please know that we appreciate your generosity and will use that gift for this purpose. We are so grateful for all the support we have received during this time. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out and ask.
All our love and appreciation,
Cherene, Ginger and Jenni
