Hello, I am Bernadette's daughter, Jocelyn. On Tuesday evening, Bernadette suffered from a brain aneurysm while in the shower and collapsed. Bernadette's husband, daughter and son aided her until the Alameda Firefighters and EMT came, stating she had a heart attack and was being sent to Highland Hospital. At Highland Hospital we learned that it was not a heart attack, but a brain aneurysm; one of her arteries burst and her brain was swelling from the fall and the blood in the brain. She was then sent to a neurosurgeon at a specialized hospital. We learned that a brain aneurysm is a type of stroke. She threw up within her lungs and has pneumonia/chemical burns. She's on the ventilator and life support. The surgery needed is to cauterize the ruptured area in her brain or insert metal coils through an artery from her thigh into her brain. Bernadette is currently in a medically induced coma. __________ UPDATES: Nurses are saying Bernadette is strong. • The drain was placed on top of the frontal lobe to drain excess liquid from the brain (6/28) • Surgery was successful, 7 metal coils were inserted to fill the ruptured artery in the brain (6/28) • No blood pressure assistance (06/28) • Another positive day but the next three will be tough (per Doctors and Nurses) as all the swelling is starting to set in post-surgery. This is expected and she has an amazing team around her 24/7 at Eden Medical Center. (06/29)
