Berenice's Dream of Citizenship

Berenice was brought to the United States with her mother and sister when she

was just 10 years old. Her family took her and her sister and fled Mexico because

of the high risk of violence against women and girls, as well as to increase access

to educational and financial opportunities. In the decades since, Northwest

Arkansas has become home to Berenice and her children, and she has used every

opportunity and resource to pay it forward to others in need of help. She now

serves as a victim advocate for the Prosecutor’s Office, where she helps victims of domestic violence and violent crimes navigate the legal system when they are

victims of crime, providing empathy and bilingual assistance that she is so poised

to provide. She is even pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family

Science at NWACC to further her skills and abilities to help families in need.

Despite all of her hard work and dedication to this community, Berenice has been

unable to become a citizen in the past due to extended processes, changes in

eligibility and the lack of family members to petition for her.

Berenice’s daughter turned 21 this year and is now able to petition for her mother to get her green card. She needs your help to raise

funds for her citizenship application.

Becoming a citizen would allow Berenice to fully participate in society, pursue her

dreams, and provide a better life for her family. She wants to continue helping those in her community and break the cycle of poverty for families like hers.

She has been working hard to save money, but it is still a significant financial

burden for her and her family. She has found a great attorney who has given her a

discount on his fees, but the legal filings and attorney fees still add up to $5000.
