Bereaved, crippled and imprisoned

"Our daughter died in that crash. No sentence could ever punish my husband more than he has punished himself. He is a broken man." - Bethel Edohasim

"Appalled that officialdom is turning a family tragedy into an avoidable calamity and a national embarrassment." - Nick Ross

“The Tribunal placed considerable weight on the overwhelming positive testimonials and references provided on Dr Edohasim's behalf, noting that many of them were written specifically for this hearing, with referees fully aware of the conviction.  There are no criticisms of his professional practice, knowledge or skills - indeed he is described as ‘a hardworking and dedicated clinician of excellent character’ “ MPTS determination 15/6/18

"The Tribunal found Dr Edohasim's clear willingness and determination to rebuild his life after a tragic incident, to be to his credit". MPTS determination 15/6/18

Who are we?
My name is Nick Ross, broadcaster and journalist who is appalled that officialdom is turning a family tragedy into an avoidable calamity and a national embarrassment.

My name is Dr Jenny Vaughan, I’m a frontline NHS consultant and medical law campaigner.

My name is Bethel Edohasim, and my daughter died after my husband had a terrible car crash. Devastatingly, on top of this tragedy, my husband was convicted with causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced to four years in prison reduced on appeal to three. He faced a fitness to practice hearing which could have caused him to lose his livelihood. However, due to the kindness of friends and family who know him, we were able to stop the GMC on 14/6/18 and he now has the chance to regain his license. This whole fight has left us with mounting legal bills and we need your help. We are not saying that Doctors are above the law, we are a bereaved family and simply need your help.

Case Background

In May 2016 Dr Barney Chizoro Edohasim was taking his daughters to a maths lesson when he lost control of the family car killing nine-year-old Olivia, severely injuring Eva, then 11, and suffering life-changing and crippling injuries himself. He is unlikely ever to walk again.

He was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced to four years, reduced on appeal to three.

The accident seemed inexplicable. Barney was a physician of unblemished character. Witnesses claimed he had overtaken at speed, sped through red traffic lights and slammed full-tilt into a wall. Tragically his efforts at emergency braking transferred 100% power to the accelerator. Supporters believe tests are needed to see if his footwear - he was wearing flip-flops - came off and leveraged the wrong pedal.

Whilst he and his supporters recognise the GMC's function is to protect public confidence in the profession, there is no reason to doubt Barney’s medical expertise or that he is a caring doctor. The Medical Defence organisation he is a member of has declined to support him. We believe because it is not medical and was originally a road traffic offence. However, for Barney and his family, it’s had terrible consequences and hasn’t stopped the GMC turning it into a fitness to practice issue! It’s also meant extreme financial hardship.

These events have left Barney traumatised, grieving, disabled, depressed and facing destitution, and leaves his wife Bethel and his surviving daughters Eva and Serena with a tragedy they can’t put behind them and a future that is bleak.

The children pleaded with the trial judge, “Please, please, let daddy go.” Instead, he was sent to prison by the courts.”

How much are we raising and why?
A private fundraising effort raised £7,000 among family and friends but we need much more to cover the final costs of him being represented at the MPTS ( medical tribunal panel) hearing.  Getting Barney back to work as a doctor and getting some family life back is the ultimate goal for Barney and his family.
