Beowulf Bash 2019

That time again! The Beowulf Bash is upon us. Each year since 1999 generous HPC vendors have provided funds for the Bash so that our community can meet, socialize, and have some fun at the annual SC conference and show. We celebrate the people who invented the Beowulf methodology around which much of our industry was built. The "Bash" is a break-even event where we spend all donations on refreshments, food, music, and a venue.

Last year, for the first time, we (the organizers) came up about $10K short in sponsorship. We launched a GoFundMe campaign (in the final days) and a group of generous community members donated $3,170 to help fund the event. The loss  was softened by the GoFundMe donations. A brief accounting of last year’s event is at https://www.clustermonkey.net/Conference-Reports/2018-beowulf-bash-go-fund-me-wrap-up.html.

This year, our projections are again coming up a bit short, and we still want to make the Beowulf Bash happen for the community. To this end, we decided to do another GoFundMe with real premiums (and with a touch of that Beowulf snark you know and love).

Here’s the deal. People often ask "what is the Beowulf Bash?" After 20 years of running this shindig we finally came up with a reasonable definition, proudly shown at the top of this page. We then went to work putting this definition on laptop labels and T-shirts as a small thank-you for your donation.

If you make your contribution by November 4th you can pick up your premium at booth 996 starting Tuesday, November 19th, or you can choose to have it sent to you after the show.

You can contribute at any level, but you really want that T-shirt (admit it!).

Any contribution would be greatly appreciated. Remember, the Beowulf Bash is a break-even event for the community.

Alternately, if your company would like to sponsor officially, we can provide a PPT slide with your company message in rotation on two 10-foot screens throughout the event and the 750+ badge swipes from attendees for $2K.

As a final note, we are looking at ways to resolve the shortfalls on a permanent basis. Look for an announcement at SC19 in Denver.
