Our beloved 6-year-old German Shepherd, Benzi, is facing a heartbreaking challenge that no pet owner ever wants to confront: he needs surgery for a total ear canal ablation on his left ear. It’s never easy to ask for help, but we find ourselves at this crossroads because Benzi is not just any dog—he’s a loyal companion, a constant source of joy, and an embodiment of love. His journey before we rescued him was filled with hardship, having endured two previous owners and a tough start in life. We are wholeheartedly committed to ensuring the rest of his days are filled with happiness and health.

Last Thursday, as I sat in the surgeon's office for Benzi’s consultation, my heart sank when I saw the estimate for the surgery. The costs are staggering, and without pet insurance, it feels a bit overwhelming. However, we’ve made the difficult decision to go ahead with the surgery because we can’t stand to see him in pain any longer. Since we welcomed him into our family four years ago, Benzi has faced relentless ear infections, requiring countless vet visits that have taken a toll on his spirit. Each visit is a traumatic experience for him, and it breaks my heart to witness his discomfort and fear.

We have exhausted every option available—antibiotics, steroids, sedation for ear cleanings, dietary changes, allergy tests, and bloodwork. Yet, despite our best efforts, Benzi now walks with his head tilted, a clear sign of his ongoing pain. His hearing and balance are diminishing, making simple tasks like climbing stairs a struggle. We’ve even tried giving him pet CBD for pain relief and applying coconut oil to soothe his ear, but nothing seems to ease his suffering. The daily cleaning of his ear is a painful ordeal for him, and the sight of his distress is utterly heartbreaking.

We were very hesitant about making this decision because of possible complications and well its surgery so you just never know but when the surgeon looked me in the eye and said, “If it were my dog, I would do the surgery,” it clarified our path. We cannot bear to watch Benzi suffer any longer, even knowing the risks. Though we’ve already spent a significant amount on vet visits, we hold onto hope that this surgery will prevent future infections and bring him the relief he so desperately needs. The estimated cost ranges from $5,400 to $6,500, not including the post-surgery antibiotics. Just for the consultation visit, we spent over $460, which included three weeks of antibiotics to prepare him for surgery, scheduled for March 5th.

They say that dogs are just a chapter in our lives, but to them, we are their entire world. To us, Benzi has been a profound blessing, alongside our other fur babies, Bella and Bayley. We do this for them, for the love they give us unconditionally. We fully understand that not everyone can contribute, and there is absolutely no obligation to do so.
