What is the trip all about?
Each year, 20-25 Bentley University students opt to take an alternative spring break trip to Florida to help in the construction of houses with Habitat for Humanity. The trip is led by Bentley upper classman who have previously attended the trip and is chaperoned by three Bentley faculty members. The trip is a truly eye-opening and life changing experience for each student.
The cost of the trip per student is about $1,000. This cost includes air fare, transportation to and from the airport in Boston and Florida, and both meals and housing for the week. Students are asked to pay for the trip in installments of $200 beginning in November.
How else does the group fundraise?
The group attending the trip typically fundraises two ways. The first is an optional personal fundraiser. Students send letters to family members and friends that explain the details of the trip and ask for a donation to help lower the cost.
The second is truly a group effort that lowers the cost of each student's trip, usually resulting in a small or no final payment. A pasta dinner is held at Bentley with endless pasta, raffle prizes and a silent auction. There is a general admission cost to enter the dinner and additional costs to purchase raffle tickets. Nearly the entire dinner is donated; the pasta, bread, salad, drinks, utensils, dessert, and prizes. The students work tirelessly in December and January to ask restaurants, grocery stores, and other companies for donations. This means, almost every dollar made at the dinner goes directly toward lowering the cost of the trip!
So then, why is the group using GoFundMe too?
This year, we're trying GoFundMe as an additional fundraiser. Each year, we have students who are especially struggling to pay for the trip. These are students who want to make a change in the world. These are students who are willing to give up going to Cancun or Panama City Beach, or even just catching up on sleep for a week to instead help people in need. We're hoping to use the money raised here to help students that find themselves in that position. Any left over money will be used to lower the cost for the entire group.
