On June 6, 2016, Jeff and his wife Kayla became the proud new parents of their first child, Bennie Wade Simmons. Bennie was born weighing 7 pounds and 12 ounces and 21.25 inches long. Everything seemed fine until Bennie turned 2 months old.
Jeff and Kayla noticed Bennie crying more often, not sleeping well, and not eating well. Jeff and Kayla took Bennie to his pediatrician for his two month checkup. When they asked the Doctor about what could be causing him to not to eat well, sleep well, the Doctor stated that it was reflux.
Jeff and Kayla did not like the response and decided the next day to make another appointment with a new pediatrician. Within an hour, Bennie was admitted to the hospital with specialists wanting to conduct test immediately.
After hours and days of testing this strong baby boy, specialist diagnosed Bennie with Encephalomalacia. Encephalomalacia is the softening of brain tissues. The softening may occur in a specific part of the brain or may be more widespread. In some rare cases, deterioration or degeneration of the brain may lead to extensive softening of the substances within. It can affect different parts of the organ and damage tissues in the frontal lobe, occipital lobe, parietal lobe as well as the temporal lobe. Specialist informed Jeff and Kayla they observed some very specific non- verbals from Bennie. It was later determined that Bennie was also having seizures, very mild, lasting approximately 5-10seconds long. Bennie has been prescribed medicine in order to assist with the seizures and for the first time since he was born, Bennie was able show his beautiful personality without pain, without headaches.
Because of that, we are asking for your support and contributions to assist with the medical costs their family will face for years to come. Anyone who knows Jeff or Kayla, know they are a great family deserving of our support. Let's do what we can to help them out - they would do the same for us!
