On January 8th, Tabby Conn contacted Meta Support regarding her Facebook account, which had unfortunately been "hacked," leading to the unauthorized use and possible fraudulent transactions. After two days of unsuccessful recovery attempts, she had the opportunity to speak with a representative named "Roy," with whom she developed a level of trust over the following weeks. Roy informed Tabby that her bank accounts linked to Meta Pay had also been compromised. He guided her through the verification process for Cash App and Venmo, even facilitating the closure of her Cash App account. Additionally, Roy advised her to send a Zelle transaction to protect her funds, assuring her of potential refunds and assistance restoring her Facebook account.
However, after experiencing a sudden lack of communication from Roy and receiving further requests from another representative named Matthew, Tabby realized she had likely fallen victim to a scam—a reality subsequently confirmed by her bank.
Coming to terms with the possibility of not recovering her funds and realizing she had been targeted was an overwhelming experience for Tabby. “It was hard to accept that this could happen to me and my family; I had never faced anything like this before,” Tabby reflected.
Determined to take action, Tabby promptly disputed the fraudulent transactions, closed her bank account, froze her credit, and filed a report with the police. So far, Venmo has been the only organization to assist by recovering some of their funds. The police have also advised Tabby that she may need to change her Social Security and driver’s license numbers to safeguard her identity.
Currently, Tabby and her family are in a period of waiting, relying on their faith as they navigate these challenges. She expressed her feelings of vulnerability, likening it to being “sheep among wolves,” and emphasized that as technology continues to advance, scammers are increasingly targeting individuals beyond just the elderly.
Tabby also emphasized the importance of vigilance and wisdom in protecting oneself from such deceitful practices: “It's a reminder for all of us to remain aware and cautious.”
On behalf of the Conn family, I humbly request any support or kindness individuals may be willing to extend for their basic needs, such as groceries or a warm meal delivered to their home. Your generous assistance would be immensely appreciated as they navigate this difficult time. Thank you for considering this appeal and for your kindness and generosity.
"The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed." - Proverbs 11:25
