Benefit in Honor of Esme Barrera

While reflecting on a way to celebrate Esme’s spirit and lasting impact on the music communities of El Paso and Austin in particular, we started thinking on how we could take a benefit show in her honor and create a similar impact. What could we do to best manifest the effect she had on our lives and communities, and create a similarly radical and joyous effect today? And then it hit us. Why not use this event to launch a pilot Girls Rock program in El Paso? Esme loved volunteering at Girls Rock Austin, a nonprofit that empowers girls, trans, and nonbinary youth through music education and performance. She coached bands and believed wholeheartedly in the ability of creative expression -- and music in particular -- to create magical shared experiences. She was a dedicated long-time volunteer, and encouraged many people to get involved, including both adults and youth.
