Dear Friends and Supporters:
Many of you know about the horrific car accident that our then 35-year-old brother, Benjamin, was involved in as a passenger on the night of June 16, 2018. Following the accident, Ben was in a coma for two weeks and suffered severe brain damage that has affected his speech and his right-side mobility. Once it was determined that Ben would survive, there was a question of whether he would walk or be able to speak again. Thankfully he now walks, though the brain injury has left him with a limp. Through intensive speech therapy, Ben is also slowly beginning to regain his expressive language. We remain hopeful that he will progressively regain usage of his right arm and hand.
Though Ben has made remarkable progress in returning to activities of daily living thanks to intensive occupational, physical, and speech therapy, he still has a long road ahead. Adding to this challenge has been a reduction in insured therapy; at the beginning of the year, his insured weekly therapy was reduced from 10 hours per week to just three--woefully insufficient to overcoming his severe speech deficits and recovering the path to gainful work life. As a result of his physical and verbal deficits, Ben has not worked since the accident and will not work in at least the next year, despite a deep desire to do so.
What Ben and His Family Need:
The generosity of friends and supporters significantly helped to alleviate the income gap that Ben's partner, Ashley, contended with over the past year, yet meeting the tremendous need required to sustain Ben and his family's medical and living expenses will be an ongoing challenge in the time ahead. Contributions to this fundraising effort will assist in covering the costs of supplemental speech therapy sessions not covered by insurance, ongoing medical expenses, and what would have been Ben’s share of living expenses.
All Funds Raised Go Exclusively to Ben's Medical Needs and His Family's Living Expenses
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please feel free to forward this fundraiser to others who may be moved to contribute.
