A spark below the gas pedal was all the warning Shameek Champion had before his car burst into flames. With 3rd degree burns over 70% of his body, he spent four months in the hospital, underwent six skin graft surgeries and is facing more. Shameek still has open wounds, pain, and currently needs daily medical attention, including physical therapy.
Shameek Champion had already overcome a lot. He grew up in the inner city in an unstable household, with scant parental support. After overcoming a drug addiction and having served prison time, he turned his life around and received an Associate’s degree Summa Cum Laude from Nyack College, and became a fulltime caseworker at Acacia Network. Then as he was just beginning to close in on a Bachelor’s degree in social work, and on his way to classes at Nyack, this freak accident threatens to take it all away.
He needs $50,000 to recapture his life by paying unreimbursed medical expenses, and making ends meet as he tries to finish college in 2023. Expenses includes a prescribed diet, medical supplies, copays, medical transport, incidental college expenses, and appropriate housing. Shameek still has a strong work ethic, and wants to be able to start a career in social work to give back to those in need. He is also a devout Christian and is grateful for God’s gifts every day.
