Double Amputee Needs Home Modifications

Donation protected
Hello.
This fundraiser is for Constance Thompson. In April 2021 after a routine exam she was diagnosed with Stage IV uterine cancer. She went through chemotherapy from May-August and was scheduled for surgery in September to have a hysterectomy. However, she contracted Covid-19 in mid-September, quarantined at home and was unable to have the surgery. On Oct 7, 2021 she was found unresponsive on her bathroom floor and was rushed to the hospital. She still tested positive for Covid-19 when admitted to the hospital. Because of her comprised immune system from the chemotherapy she developed sepsis (a life-threatening complication of an infection) which led to gangrene in her feet and on Oct 22, 2021 both her feet had to be amputated. She spent weeks in the hospital and in a rehab facility. She was finally able to have the surgery for the cancer in Dec. On Feb 23rd she had her last chemotherapy treatment . In January she received her prosthesis and continues to have home physical therapy to learn how to walk with them. It’s a slow and often painful process for her learning to walk with the prosthesis. Constance’s long term goals are to get proficient on the prosthesis so that she can get back to driving, to church, to work and most of all to get her independence back. Her medical insurance covered most of her hospital and rehab bills but will only pay for one prosthesis (and she needs two of them). For her home her insurance only covers the cost of one wheelchair, a hospital bed and a toilet chair. Her home has to be modified for her to live in it and insurance pays for none of the cost of those modifications. She checked for a wheelchair-accessible apartment to move to, but the waiting lists were two to five years long. She does not qualify for Social Security Disability, Medicare or Medicaid. She has checked various other resources for the disabled for assistance in modifying her home and the prothesis but there is nothing she qualified for. Although she has her temporary prosthesis, they aren’t made to be worn 24 hours a day so a wheelchair will now always be part of her daily life. She needs financial assistance for the following Durable Medical Equipment expenses: outside ramp ($3,900.00) to get in\out of her home, electric chair lifts ($12,000) so she can get to her upstairs and basement, modified bathtub ($12,500.) for wheelchair access, vehicle modification for hand controls ($2,000), two additional wheelchairs so one is on each floor ($989) and the price of one prosthesis (anywhere from $14,000-$30,000.00). She hasn’t received the bill yet for the prosthesis so exact amount isn’t known. Constance is grateful for any donations. She thanks you for caring and for your prayers. Be blessed!
