Cooper the Goat's Surgery Expenses

The Belmont Goats is Portland's nonprofit resident herd, offering an oasis of rural community amidst the built, urban environment.

This week it became clear that Cooper (one of our 4-year-old Nigerian dwarfs) had developed some sort of blockage in his urinary tract. After an intial veterinary consult on Wednesday, December 27, it was communicated to us that the next 24 hours were crucial and that if Cooper did not succesfully urinate, we likely were looking at surgery.

Thursday evening, December 28, we drove Cooper the 85 miles from Portland to Corvallis, where the staff at the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Hospital at Oregon State University determined that indeed the calcium carbonate stones were dramatic enough to require major surgery, not merely a "lesser" procedure.

Stones must be surgically removed from his bladder, that large stone (right side) must be removed from his urethra, and a tube must be inserted to temporarily bypass his urethra altogether.

Cooper is undergoing this surgery overnight, and then will face a ten-day recovery period at the hospital, away from his sister Bambi, who when Cooper left our site this afternoon ran to the gate bleating after him.

Thanks to a generous donation earlier this year from a local business, our reserves were sufficient enough to pay the required deposit up front, but
your generous donations here will help cover the cost of the surgery.

This is an immediate financial need, and no contribution is too small.

The Belmont Goats always has depended upon the care and consideration of the herd's supporters, who range from Portland proper to around the country and even the world.

The herd would not exist without you, and we are forever grateful for everything you do to help us keep the herd happy, healthy, and publcily accessible.

Thanks so much for the past twenty-four hours of non-stop statements and comments of support and love for Cooper! We will be keeping everyone aprised here as well as, as we have been, via our social media channels.

(Note: I am project manager for The Belmont Goats and one of three owners of the herd. Donations to this campaign do not come to me, but are disbursed to The Belmont Goats organization itself.)
