Hey everyone!
I have been dealing with wrist problems for a little over 2 years. I have done all of the non-invasive tactics in order to see if I could manage it without having to have surgery. Acupuncture, massage, rest, ice, heat, elevation, wearing a brace, strengthening exercises, supplements, etc. You name it, I've probably tried it. Over time the pain has worsened to the point where it has limited my overall mobility and I can no longer put weight on it. It has affected my quality of life as well as my ability to learn new skills (like handstand training), practice yoga, exercise, etc. It also affects things that can often be taken for granted that are important aspects of being a performer like fan dancing, floorwork, striptease elements (ever tried to remove a bra hook with a bum wrist? Ha!)
I was able to get an appointment with a specialist and she recommended surgery. She diagnosed me with a ganglion cyst which is not serious, just inconvenient. A ganglion cyst is formed when joint fluid escapes where it's supposed to be and pushes out between the bones. Mine is in a spot where it pushes on nerves and connective tissue as well and needs to be removed. The surgery is same day and very routine, it's the recovery time that is the biggest hurdle to overcome. As a self employed performer, my body is literally my work.
My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, July 23rd and I will be in a cast for 2 weeks followed by 4-6 weeks of physical therapy. For the first few weeks I won't be able to work and after that I'll slowly be able to incorporate easy stuff like hosting, teaching, etc.
If you feel inclined to support, all the funds will go towards keeping things afloat while I can't work or teach, any medical costs not covered by insurance, medication, and physical therapy costs.
