Bella Rae Hardy recovery

Bella is in need of help. Our sweet, smart, active 12 year old little girl was recently diagnosed with CRPS after a knee injury in October that didn’t heal properly, which was possibly tied to her underlying hyper mobility condition. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic, progressive, and "incurable" pain condition that occurs after an injury, surgery, or illness. CRPS is believed to be caused by damage to, or malfunction of, the sympathetic nervous systems. It results in bone loss, muscle atrophy and permanent disability/disfigurement. An individuals circulation and temperature perception becomes compromised. Peripheral neuropathy and burning pain are hallmarks symptoms. It is the most painful condition on the McGill pain index, beating cancer, amputation, and labor pain.

Currently, there is no cure for this debilitating rare disease; but there are treatments that show promise in reducing pain and can lead to a normal functional life. Unfortunately these treatments are not covered by health insurance. Since the disease is rare and there is no set cure or treatment plan that works the same for everyone, so many of the treatment options available are considered “experimental” and cost thousands of dollars out of pocket.

After months of unanswered questions, endless appointments, MRIs, Xrays, Bella traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where she was officially diagnosed with CRPS. Her next journey will be to the InterX Therapy Clinic in Dallas for neuro-stimulation therapy. The only clinic of its kind in the country, and has had great success. Janice Walker at InterX has been treating CRPS for over 15 years through this non-invasive therapy. Again this treatment is not covered by insurance and will take 2 weeks.

The next treatment option will be ketamine infusions at the Ketamine Clinic in Midland, which are also not covered by insurance and costs thousands for the 10 day initial invasive treatment and maintenance boosters. Ketamine has been called a breakthrough in chronic pain conditions such as CRPS, and there have been patients who reach remission.

Since Bella’s progressive injury, she has missed months of school, she has missed out on day to day activities. She lives in a constant pain and is missing out on life. We are optimistic that pursuing these treatments could reduce her pain, give her the chance at a normal life, and possibly even reach rare remission. Bella is a fighter, and with your help, love, prayers, and support, she can take her life back. Thank you and God bless.
