Bella Coola Bear Attack Nuxalk Support

Donation protected
On November 20, a Grade 4/5 outdoor education class from Acwsalcta School in Nuxalk Territory (Bella Coola, BC) were attacked by a grizzly bear. Three students and a teacher sustained serious injuries. This was an unprecedented attack and occurred despite the group following standard safety protocols, and teachers fighting off the bear. Our community lives in good relationship with bears, and is shocked by this tragic incident. These funds will be used to support the families of those injured with medical and related expenses, as well as community healing if family needs are met.

Note: This account was created by a trusted third party with the permission of Nuxalk leadership and affected families. Funds will be transferred directly to the Nation and then to a "banker" designated by each family. Once family needs are met, remaining funds will be used to support healing and resourcing at the school and community scale, based on advice from Nuxalk knowledge holders and cultural leaders, possibly including an honour feast for those involved. This event has affected each of us profoundly. We are very grateful for the broad care and support we are receiving - Stutwiniitulhap!
