Belinda's Fight Against Glioblastoma

In late June of 2022 my mom was admitted to the hospital for what initially appeared to be a stroke: weakness on her left side, confusion, vision problems, eye pain, and headaches. An array of tests in the ER revealed the true cause no one had expected: a brain tumor. A three-centimeter lesion located in the center of her right parietal lobe. And only four days later, she was undergoing emergency brain surgery. After this, all seemed well—at least for a while. The tumor gone, her symptoms began to subside. But three days after celebrating her birthday we were devastated once more. We received the news that this tumor was a Glioblastoma. An aggressive, grade IV terminal form of cancer.

Glioblastoma is a rare form of cancer with a survival rate past five years for adults of only 5%. While the disease has made headlines with John McCain and Beau Biden both receiving diagnoses, research is still very behind. There is no cure, and care options are limited.

As of now my mom has undergone the standard of care treatment of radiation and chemo for six weeks. And has continued with monthly cycles of chemotherapy. Based on her condition she became eligible to join a clinical trial which is a huge benefit for her fight.

To receive the best care, my mom needs assistance with funds to help where insurance can’t. Days prior to her admission into the hospital, her job of 17 years shut down leaving her without any employment or income. Donations will be used for mounting medical bills, chemotherapy and other prescription drug coverage, lab charges and scans, and cost of living expenses. With savings dwindling, it’s difficult to offset this loss of income and the constant increase in treatment costs.
