I am raising funds for my former college roommate and best friend, Belen. If you’re seeing this and unfamiliar with Belen, we met at Oglethorpe University where she was one of three incoming students that was awarded the highly competitive Civic Engagement Scholarship. A bio-psych major, Belen had dreams of going into the medical field to help others. She embodies a life of service and is one of the most generous and thoughtful people I know.

Belen currently lives with a tumor in her neck that is damaging her spinal nerves and blood vessels, creating muscle weakness in her arms and legs, and causing hemifacial paralysis. This condition has restricted her life severely. She experiences multiple seizures per week limiting her vision, hearing, and mobility.

In addition, her home burned down in late 2021. She now lives in a half-finished basement which regularly floods. She continues to negotiate with her insurance company yet nothing has been resolved. This year Belen's mother suffered three debilitating brain aneurysms.

And yet, throughout all of this, Belen is the sole provider for her family in the US and Mexico. However, her income is simply not enough to cover her family's day-to-day needs and proper medical treatment for herself and care for her mother.

Belen has been managing the symptoms caused by her tumor, but as time passes, more damage to her body occurs. We are raising funds for medical treatment to address the root issue and surgically remove the tumor. This procedure is overdue and without our help, she risks not being able to get it at all. Together--not alone--we can help Belen receive the treatment she needs to live the life she deserves.

Estoy recaudando fondos para mi ex compañera de cuarto de la universidad y mejor amiga, Belén. Si está viendo esto y no está familiarizado con Belén, nos conocimos en la Universidad de Oglethorpe, donde ella fue una de los tres estudiantes entrantes que recibió la altamente competitiva Beca de Participación Cívica. Además, su casa se quemó a finales de 2021. Ahora vive en un basement a medio construir que se inunda periódicamente. Continúa negociando con su compañía de seguros pero no se ha resuelto nada. Este año , la madre de Belén sufrió tres aneurismas cerebrales debilitantes.

Y, sin embargo, a pesar de todo esto, es el único sostén de su familia en Estados Unidos y México. Sin embargo, sus ingresos simplemente no son suficientes para cubrir las necesidades diarias de su familia y el tratamiento médico adecuado para ella y el cuidado de su madre.
