Alain Elie Dahan from Ottawa Canada is helping his childhood friends get back on their feet.
As most of you know, I grew up on the rough yet warm streets of Beirut with family and friends who have been impacted by the deadly port explosion on Tuesday, which killed some 150 people, wounded thousands and caused 300,000 to lose their homes. Most of us have been touched directly or indirectly by this catastrophe and a few including my wife and I continue to be reached out to by numerous families for immediate support, employment opportunities from abroad, or to sponsor Lebanese families into Canada which is a process on its own.
Lebanon’s economic crisis was already on the cusp of complete collapse, with the Lebanese pound already losing 80% of its value, which means that the prices of basic necessities have risen dramatically prior to the port explosion. With the port explosion, we can only imagine what is coming next.
The world has stepped in to provide medical and food supplies, however, for all the right reasons, these generous endeavours will not rebuild what was destructed (homes, businesses, transportations vehicles, etc.) nor will it create employment opportunities for a suffering culture. With a government that is in complete paralysis, we only have one another.
To put this into perspective, and lets keep in mind that most cannot withdraw their own money in the banks due to the economic crisis.
The funds raised will be used by and for friends who:
a) completely lost their businesses and its assets (properties, cars, computers, supplies, etc),
b) have been unemployed for over a year,
c) cannot afford medical prescription drugs, and
d) are struggling to purchase day-to-day basic necessities.
I cannot do this one on my own, it is a catastrophe of unprecedented emotional and financial magnitude which is why we need your help. Any donation counts irrespective of the amount and will make a difference in their lives and is an attempt to restore some hope.
For traceability and accountability purposes, I will be transferring the donations from my account in Canada to the hands of my friends Carlos Ibrahim who will be responsible to distribute the funds to families in need under my watch.
