How is art constructed? How does one go through the process of creating a work of art? Does it always find itself functioning within the same parameters? This film, from the get-go, challenges the traditional ideas of how characters are written and how stories are told. ‘Navarasa’, first explored Indian-Sanskrit texts that explore nine emotional states that can be expressed and enhanced through performance. The project uses this concept to create characters that go beyond typical archetypes and improvisation to create its narrative to portray the 'banal' and the 'every day'.
This film tackles issues of cultural ignorance, social hierarchies, and community and those of relationships, identity, and existentialism. Through performance and conversation, this film looks at a theatre group of 9 as they travel to India to tour their show while looking at a country outside of the box it has been placed in. We are contextualizing these conversations of representation and interculturalism with seminal historical texts from New Delhi, Lucknow and Mumbai.
My name is Aanya Pawar; I am a BFA Acting student at the California Institute of the Arts. My failed attempts in real life to bridge gaps between two cultures led me to explore the extent of artists' process and its basis of where I come from. My city, my country, and I have a lot more than the parameters society sets for us, we aren’t only what sets us apart but also what makes us similar. This film is a small attempt to challenge how culture often dictates the trajectory of storytelling.
Since the film is based in India, this fundraiser will help cover costs for the cast and crew travel, venue, equipment, and marketing/ promotional material, Etc. We genuinely appreciate your support; this would not be possible without you!
