beggared - a play about judgemental attitudes.
Donation protected
Dear Friends and Theatre Lovers,
After three decades of bringing characters to life on stage, I'm reaching out with an extraordinary opportunity that could reignite my acting career. I am an actor who is seeking support to bring a one-man play to life that has been booked at two prestigious international festivals, namely: the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (the world's largest arts festival) and the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa. This powerful piece, directed and co-written with the talented Gideon de Wet , explores
A one man play about a White South African man who is beggared by his life and learns to make a living using a sign at a traffic light. Please help, no food. That type of thing. He learns to endure the judgements of his fellow man. He moves into an informal settlement and learns about Ubuntu. He thinks the situation is temporary. It becomes a little like “Next year in Jerusalem”
Although it is a weighty topic, it is handled with humour and great care.
The Total Goal: 3500 pounds
What Your Support Will Fund:
• Travel to South Africa in May, for rehearsals and perform warm-up shows
• Return flight to back to Scotland from South Africa to perform for in Edinburgh performances
• Accommodation in both countries
• Marketing materials (posters, flyers, program and any other forms of publicity we can lock down - for example, digital advertising)
• rights
• Director fees and stage management fees
This project represents more than just another performance – it's my chance for a fresh start. I left South Africa twelve years ago with my son Aidan and my late wife Ana where I hoped to be able to make a living from the career I had spent thirty years crafting. However, Scotland proved challenging for an established actor starting anew, but if this play succeeds at these prestigious festivals, this opportunity might open new doors here in the United Kingdom and beyond.
Your support, no matter the size, will help bring this dream to life. Every donation will be acknowledged in our show program, and contributions of 25 pounds or more will receive a bespoke T-shirt or an Ashtray whichever your choose.
