About Us

Before You Had A Name, an interdisciplinary collaborative performance, brings together dance, music, and multi-media artwork in a powerful union to explore themes of maternity and womanhood.  It will premiere on March 16 & 17 at The Edye Second Space at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.  We, the creators, invite you to support and join us in bringing our vision to the stage and beyond.  With your generous donations, we will be able to fund the creation of audio-visual media, ensure the highest caliber of live musical performance, afford additional behind the scenes technical support, generate photographic and video documentation of our production processes along the way, and produce a finished film inspired by this project.  In order to make this all possible, we are launching a campaign to raise $6,000.  

Commissioned by the Barak Ballet of Los Angeles for their new "OFF Balance Series," Before You Had A Name is the collaborative vision of violinist, Heather Powell, choreographer, Danielle Rowe, and multi-media artist, Alisa Lapidus.  It will feature Sarah Van Patten, San Francisco Ballet Principal Dancer, dancers of the Barak Ballet, live musical performance on the violin and cello and original multi-media projections.  Cellist, Ross Gasworth, will be joining us for all three performances and director, Raquel Gallego, will be creating a film inspired by the piece.

Guided by the spirit of creative partnership and inspired by the experience of maternity and the myriad of complex emotions, psychological evolution, reflection and projection that this journey evokes in a woman's mind, body and life, we are thrilled to present artwork on a subject so near and dear to our female-led creative team. Heather and Sarah are currently pregnant, expecting their first and second children respectively, while Danielle and Alisa are first-time mothers to toddlers.  With ultimate admiration for all the nurturers and mother-figures in our lives, this is a moment in time especially poignant and profound for us to be creating this work, performing it and sharing it with you.  Your donations mean so much to us -- we hope you will be a part of this incredible journey!
