Tales of the Remaining este un film documentar intim — un efort urgent de a păstra ultimele voci vii ale supraviețuitorilor Holocaustului din România.

The Vision | Viziunea Documentarului

Romania was one of the largest perpetrators of genocide in Europe after Nazi Germany, responsible for the deaths and deportations of hundreds of thousands of Jews, Roma, Sinti, members of the LGBTQ+ community and political dissidents. Still, public discussion of this history remains fragmented, often overshadowed by denial or silence.

This film seeks to reopen the conversation in a way that allows the audience to transform witnessing into action: to preserve memory, to confront denial and to inspire empathy.

România Mare a fost responsabilă pentru deportarea ș moartea a sute de mii de evrei, romi, sinti, persoane LGBT+ și disidenți politici. Cu toate acestea, discuția publică despre această istorie rămâne fragmentată, adesea umbrită de negare sau tăcere.

Acest documentar își propune să redeschidă conversația într-un mod ce permite audienței să transforme mărturia în acțiune astfel încât să păstreze memoria, să confrunte negarea și să inspire empatia.

The Approach | Abordarea Creativǎ

In our creative process, there is no external narrator or imposed control over the narrative flow.

The survivors determine the pace, tone, and shape of what is shared. They lead the conversation, and we follow.

The film embraces a multilingual texture of Romanian and German, carefully subtitled to preserve nuance and authenticity. We’ll use close and attentive camerawork, holding space for silence and non-verbal expression. The frame is designed to centre the survivor’s presence, minimising visual distraction and heightening intimacy.

The participants have full control over where and how they wish to be filmed, the presence of personal objects or memorabilia (if any), the language they speak and the time they need.

Some sequences will include location-based audio-video recordings - walking through present-day streets or landscapes, accompanied by the survivor’s voice and stories.

În procesul nostru creativ, nu există un narator exterior și nici un control impus asupra curgerii poveștii. Supraviețuitorii sunt cei care stabilesc ritmul, tonul și forma a ceea ce este împărtășit. Ei conduc conversația — noi suntem martori.

Intervievații au control deplin asupra locului și modului în care doresc să fie filmați, asupra prezenței obiectelor personale sau a amintirilor (dacă există), asupra limbii în care aleg să vorbească și asupra timpului de care au nevoie.

Filmul îmbrățișează o textură multilingvă de română și germană - idiș și maghiară unde se aplica - atent subtitrată pentru a păstra nuanța și autenticitatea momentului.

Vom folosi un cadraj apropiat și atent, care lasă loc tăcerii și expresiilor non-verbale. Cadrul este gândit pentru a centra prezența supraviețuitorului, reducând orice distragere vizuală și intensificând intimitatea întâlnirii.

Unele secvențe vor include înregistrări audio-video realizate în spații încărcate de memorie — plimbări pe străzile sau prin peisajele de azi, însoțite de vocea și povestea supraviețuitorului.

What Is Needed? | De ce avem nevoie?

Earlier this year we contacted key institutions and organisations in Romania, Germany and the UK with the aim to identify Romanian-born Holocaust survivors, willing to share their stories with us.

Exactly two months ago we received a positive answer from Frankfurt. A Jewish care home confirmed not only the presence of three Romanian-born Jewish residents but also their willingness to sit down with and talk with us about their stories. What we considered our pre-production phase, quickly became a ‘we must act now’ moment.

The filming trip to Frankfurt was organised and booked in the weeks following the first exchange. However, this project still finds itself in the very early stages of development, and therefore this fortunate turn of events has come with some costs for our team. The director and producer are currently financing this field trip to Frankfurt, as we have not yet secured any significant funding.

Therefore, to cover the costs of this shooting week in Frankfurt, we decided to launch this campaign and keep you informed daily about the progress of this project. Your support will cover:

La începutul acestui an, am contactat principalele instituții și organizații din România, Germania și Marea Britanie, cu scopul de a identifica supraviețuitori ai Holocaustului născuți în România, dispuși să își împărtășească poveștile cu noi.

Exact acum două luni am primit un răspuns pozitiv din Frankfurt. Un cămin evreiesc pentru vârstnici ne-a confirmat nu doar prezența a trei evrei născuți în România, ci și dorința lor de a sta de vorbă cu noi și de a-și împărtăși amintirile.

Ceea ce consideram până atunci o etapă de pre-producție s-a transformat brusc într-un moment de „trebuie să acționăm acum”. În săptămânile care au urmat primului schimb de mesaje, am organizat și programat deplasarea de filmare la Frankfurt.

Totuși, acest proiect se află încă în fazele sale incipiente de dezvoltare, iar această întorsătură norocoasă a lucrurilor a venit și cu anumite costuri pentru echipa noastră. Regizoarea și producătoarea finanțează în prezent deplasarea la Frankfurt din resurse proprii, întrucât nu am reușit încă să asigurăm o finanțare semnificativă.

The Impact | Impactul

Tales of the Remaining replaces the formality of interviews with the intimacy of testimony.

In a comfortable environment the survivors will lead the conversation, free from restrictions or expectations, and not obliged to speak only about the Holocaust. One thing is certain: they will shed light on Romania’s unacknowledged past.

Its open, non-interventionist method is designed to serve as a blueprint for other minority communities to document and preserve their own histories.

Beyond the film, after its festival circuit, the project will evolve into a long-term educational and community resource: discussion materials for schools and museums, and an interactive online archive of interviews, footage, and research.

Risks & Challenges

Given that most survivors are now over 85 years old, we as a creative team definitely sense the pressure of time, the urgency of capturing their stories, with a heavy dose of sensitivity: challenges that we as a team are prepared to meet. Building and maintaining trust with participants requires patience, care, and a deep sense of ethical responsibility.

Working with such a difficult history carries emotional weight, but also an obligation to approach each moment with transparency, consent, and respect. By prioritising these values and allowing time for genuine connection, we turn sensitivity itself into the film’s greatest strength: authenticity and trust.

Our multilingual and non-interventionist approach requires a flexible and responsive workflow. Because survivors set their own pace and boundaries, we can't always follow a conventional filming schedule. Our crew adapts to each story as it unfolds. Again, a challenge that we are prepared to meet. However, this also requires us to remain financially open and ready for last-minute budget changes.

Tales of the Remaining înlocuiește formalitatea interviului cu intimitatea mărturiei.

Într-un cadru confortabil, supraviețuitorii vor conduce conversația, liberi de orice constrângeri sau așteptări, fără obligația de a vorbi exclusiv despre Holocaust. Un lucru însă e sigur: vor aduce lumină asupra unui trecut al României prea puțin recunoscut.

Metoda sa deschisă, neintervenționistă, este gândită ca un model pentru alte comunități minoritare, care își doresc să-și documenteze și să-și păstreze propriile istorii.

Dincolo de film, după circuitul său festivalier, proiectul va evolua într-o resursă educațională și comunitară pe termen lung: materiale de discuție pentru școli și muzee, precum și o arhivă online interactivă ce va reuni interviuri, imagini și cercetări.

Beatrice Benedek (UK/Romania)

director and producer

Bea is a UK-based actor, director and artist. Her academic background in European Studies and International Relations gave her a foundation for understanding the complex histories of nations and the ways in which silence and denial shape collective memory.

Still, her deeper motivation for this project comes from growing up in Romania, a country that has not truly confronted its role in the Holocaust, nor come to terms with many other chapters of its 20th century past. The legacy of silence is something Beatrice witnessed first-hand.

Unprocessed histories, when left unattended, resurface in distorted forms: political narratives of nationalism, xenophobia, antisemitism and fear of the “other”. This film is a way of engaging with that reality to bring unspoken truths into the open.

Though this is Beatrice Benedek's first feature documentary, her extensive theatre experience equips her to guide stories with empathy and capture intimate, human-centred narratives. These skills directly inform her approach to documentary filmmaking, allowing her to capture survivors’ testimonies with sensitivity and depth.

Formarea sa academică în Studii Europene și Relații Internaționale i-a oferit o bază solidă pentru a înțelege complexitatea istoriilor naționale și felul în care tăcerea și negarea modelează memoria colectivă.

Totuși, motivația ei profundă pentru acest proiect vine din faptul că a crescut în România — o țară care nu s-a confruntat pe deplin nici cu rolul său în Holocaust, nici cu alte capitole ale trecutului său din secolul XX.

Moștenirea tăcerii este ceva ce Beatrice a trăit direct. Istoriile netratate, lăsate în umbră, reapar sub forme distorsionate: narațiuni politice de naționalism, xenofobie, antisemitism și teama de „celălalt”.

Acest film reprezintă o modalitate de a se angaja față de această realitate, aducând adevărurile nerostite la suprafață.

Deși Tales of the Remaining este primul lungmetraj documentar semnat de Beatrice Benedek, vasta ei experiență teatrală o ajută să ghideze poveștile cu empatie și să surprindă narațiuni intime, centrate pe oameni.

Yeşim Güzelpınar (UK/Turkey)

Yeşim is a Turkish linguist and producer based in the UK. Founder of Balık Arts, a UK-based film and arts charity, Yeşim has been supporting young people and adults in creating socially engaged films, while curating festivals that amplify unheard voices, celebrate diversity, dialogue and creative expression.

Yeşim este lingvistă și producătoare de film din Turcia, stabilită în Marea Britanie.

Fondatoare a organizației Balık Arts, o fundație de film și arte cu sediul în Marea Britanie, Yeşim sprijină tineri și adulți în realizarea de filme cu impact social, în timp ce curatoriază festivaluri care dau voce celor neauziți, celebrează diversitatea, dialogul și expresia creativă.

Giovanni Mocellin (Italy)

Giovanni is a freelance photographer and videomaker based in Trento, Italy. He focuses on capturing the people and reality in a grounded way with authenticity and transparency, always aiming to reveal the deeper story behind each subject. His previous work includes shooting a documentary for a charity in Uganda (2025).

Giovanni este fotograf și videomaker independent, stabilit la Trento, în Italia.

El își concentrează munca pe surprinderea oamenilor și a realității într-un mod autentic și onest, căutând mereu să dezvăluie povestea mai profundă din spatele fiecărui subiect.

Öykü Vidinli (Italy/Turkey)

Öykü is a Turkish multimedia student currently based in Venice, Italy. An aspiring screenwriter and editor, her previous experiences include editing the documentary shot in Uganda and assisting at a film production agency in Venice. She aims to explore identity, memory and transformation through her stories.

Damla Altıntaṣ (Turkey)

Damla is a Turkish Computer Engineering graduate and community-minded project assistant working across borders. She blends coordination, research, and practical IT/digital solutions to support social impact work. She has contributed to Balık Arts and Pusula Gençlik Topluluğu and is committed to youth leadership. Damla recently started an associate degree in Social Media Management and supports this project remotely through her experience in youthwork, administration, and facilitating social change via film.

Damla este absolventă de Inginerie în Calculatoare și asistentă de proiect cu spirit comunitar, implicată în inițiative transnaționale.

Combină coordonarea, cercetarea și soluțiile IT/digitale pentru a sprijini proiecte cu impact social.
