GoFundMe- 20lbs of Excessive Hanging Skin: Help Me Overcome My Physical Pain, seizure control and Emotional Struggle.
My name is Jeiña Esteem or to most of you Jeiña Brito, and I am reaching out to share my weight loss story and seek support for a life-changing cause. I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life and in September 2013, I was diagnosed with Catamenial Epilepsy-Stress Induced (hormonal epilepsy) leading to a HUGE significant change in my life. I went from being completely independent to having to depend on someone - often times several people - to move around the way I need to, even to this day. In January 2014, DMV suspended my license due to my “recent medical diagnosis.” I was devasted. I instantly worried about how I would get around? How was I going to get to work?! After about what felt like a forever temper tantrum, I told myself, “Jeiña, you will now have to walk. Don’t give up!” So I did just that, I was walking…(in my Forest Gump voice ). Over the last 9 years, I’ve worked tirelessly to improve my health and well-being, ultimately losing 200lbs naturally through hard work, dedication and walking.
However, the dramatic weight loss has left me with severe excess skin that poses serious health risks and causes immense physical and emotional pain. I was recently diagnosed with “body dysmorphia” and my pain has also now become a trigger for a seizure episode. I have seen three cosmetic surgeons. All three have confirmed the medical necessity of a full body lift to remove the excess skin. But despite their recommendations, my insurance has denied coverage three times, leaving me in a difficult and painful situation.
The hanging skin, particularly in my arms and abdominal area, has now become excruciatingly painful and has contributed significantly to the development of chronic pain disorder and unnecessary seizures. In October 2022, I gave birth to my son and after 72 hours of labor, I was told I would be having an emergency C-Section. I was given an epidural twice but both fell out due to the amount of hanging skin on my back. My anesthesiologist told me he did not feel comfortable giving me a 3rd epidural because it could possibly leave me paralyzed. He congratulated me on my weight loss but said that due to the amount of excess skin, my only option was an ER C-Section. My surgeon walked in and asked my husband David a question I will never forget. “If anything were to happen, who do you want to save? Your wife or your son?” I lost it.
Since the 6th grade, I have hidden my arms under jackets, hoodies and long-sleeved shirts to conceal the shame and insecurity I carry and carried in my arms before and after weight loss, in my attempt to not allow the visible excess skin to impact my confidence and quality of life.
I am humbly asking for support in raising $30,000 to cover the cost of a full body lift surgery. Your generous contribution will not only alleviate my physical suffering, but also provide me with the opportunity to live a healthier life and restore my overall well-being and confidence.
I understand the challenges we all face, especially in today's world, but any amount you can give will make a significant difference in my life. Your kindness and compassion will help me overcome this health obstacle and move forward with renewed hope and strength.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and consider supporting me on this journey towards healing and self-acceptance.
With deep gratitude,
Jeiña
