Bedford Family Assistance Fund

About a week ago, Morte  Bedford was taken transported by Ambulance to Nanticoke Hospital unconscious from what appeared to be low blood sugar. It turned out to be much worse: his blood sugar had bottomed out and he had an unknown down time due to the fact that everyone thought he was just sleeping. He was immediately admitted to the hospital, given fluids, meds and even two blood transfusions. There was no neurologist on staff so on Sunday night (3/17) he was transported by MedEvac to Christiana Hospital. Morte was placed on vent with a feeding tube. After meeting with the doctors the family was advised that Morte was in a coma and the chances of him coming out were very slim. Option's were weighed and after talking to everyone in the family it was decided to remove the vent and transport him to hospice care. We felt this would be what he would have wanted since he had previously stated this in the past and even refused a feeding tube himself in the past.  Obviously, this was devastating and difficult to comprehend or come to terms with for all who love him so much.

Morte is a military veteran who served in the Army & National Guard; he has worked with horses for over 40yrs as a groomer/trainer & even owner. He was an EMS officer in the Goodwill Volunteer Fire Department & one of the first paid EMT's to work for Queen Anne's County Department of Emergency Services.

What makes this incomprehensible situation even worse is that, unfortunately, even though Morte is insured through the state  it doesn't cover everything, including all hospice nursing care, mortuary, and funeral services, which are so expensive. His family is struggling with the transportation costs, visitation, time off of work, etc., as they try to keep him surrounded by friends and family with the assurance that all is taken care of. Please donate any amount you can to make Morte’s last days as bright as possible for him and his family. Thank you.
