My name is Rebecca DeRaddo. At a young age In high school my parents split and I turned to drinking as a band aid to try and heal the pain. I ask for all the kids that start this way you help your kids because growing up feeling alone and beginning to form an addiction may be treated. I unfortunately let it escalate and twenty years later I let the unthinkable happen to me. I was diagnosed with jaundace (kidney and liver failure) and now need a liver transplant to survive (as well as never drinking alcohol again or I will die.) A blessing in disguise or an unimaginable curse really happened to me. Although I know how the story began I am praying it will end well. I could not have imagined the costs that have already been incurred so far in two months, four hospital stays, transportation, medical expenses, and out of pocket costs and it's not over by far. The transplant process is long, usually lasting from about 180 days from pretransplant testing to hospital discharge ( which I haven't even heard from Strong Memorial to make these appointments yet.) Liver Transplant are functional between 80-85% times after one year, which seems like a lifetime. Liver Transplant costs can be up to $812,500. This does not include medical expenses like pretransplant testing, surgery, copays, post operative care and rehab, prescriptions, and follow up testing and care. Some of the biggest burdens are the non medical expenses such as transportation such as ride-sharing, food for me and the pets, and lodging close to transplant facility center before and after surgery. Fundraising is functioning as a hub of encouragement from donors, loved ones, and even strangers around the globe. I am a humble person and have done anything and everything for anyoney whole life and this time I need help. I appreciate everyone's support, even all the get well cards.
