My father absolutely loved teaching. He continued into his early 80s. However, my father struggled to find steady work creating an uncertain economic future for our family. My brother has been disabled since birth and my mother suffered from several chronic conditions. It fell to me to help make it all work. I began a career in public service straight out of college. I managed to make enough to send money home. What I wasn’t prepared for, nor were my parents, were the unmanageable costs of aging. I had to take most of 2024 off from work, which drained my savings, to care for my father and brother who live in a different state. My father ultimately passed late last summer. While I tried to return to work full time, I ultimately received a short-term contracting opportunity concluding in Nov. I’ve been search for work since then without success.
