All funds raised will be used to cover costs associated with getting the 58 portraits to each of the victims’ families. This includes:
The packing and transport of the portraits from Portland, OR to Las Vegas.
The set up and showing of the portraits, which will take place at the JW Marriott in Las Vegas on September 30th in conjunction with other one year anniversary activities. Following this viewing, the gifting to the families will take place.
For the those families that are not attending the portraits will be individually shipped to them.
Lodging for key volunteers needed for set up, showing and shipping.
Miscellaneous reception costs for the show.
Any extra funds will be used to provide reproductions of the original portraits, in situations where there is a need within a family for more than one portrait.
It is easy to feel powerless in the face of terrible news, but as artists, one thing we can do is make portraits of the individuals killed to show they are not just another statistic. There is powerful visual impact created by showing all of these people together; in addition to the message that people cared enough to volunteer their time and talents to honor their memories and share a loving gesture and bring some comfort to the families and loved-ones and their communities by showing that people care. Even people who don’t know them.
Why? To Show that Love is Stronger than Hate. There is so much negativity/ugliness in this world. This project aims to spread beauty and Kindness. Kindness often begets kindness. We aim to continue this cycle rather than violence.
