Beatriz y Sofia HELP fund

Hello, friends and possibly new friends around the world. I'm John. I'm helping raise funds for 6 months of "Phase 1" basic needs for my friend, Beatriz, and her daughter, Sofia. Beatriz called me earlier tonight, and she asked (me) for help... not an easy thing to say aloud.

Beatriz has been "knocked on her butt" with dire health issues due to mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as mobility, cardiac and neurological issues and lack of employment since the Summer of 2020.... thus spiraling into frequent lacks of energy for completing job applications or even working, not being able to provide necessary nutritional food to maintain/build her strength, sometimes being too weak to complete basic household tasks or home/yard maintenance, feeling guilty for knowing that Sofia has needed to mature quickly to help care for Beatriz, etc., etc.

Now in her most dire physical condition(s), Beatriz has fallen behind on everything… bills in collections, forfeiting a lot of living basics, etc. She wants to clean her house, pull weeds from her yard, work and get paid!, go back to helping her family and friends, etc. And she needs our help to heal to do that.

In addition, Beatriz has had difficulty getting answers regarding her unique medical conditions. In the best-case scenario, her recovery will take years to get her back to full strength. Further below is a list of her current medical diagnoses, in addition to her lack of employment.

Sofia has been a shining light for Beatriz. Sofia is finishing high school and has already been accepted for and is considering admission into several prestigious universities -- with full scholarships into high honors degree programs! Like any proud Mom, Beatriz wants to provide for Sofia and is incredibly excited to see how Sofia will take off into her own.

Donations to this Beatriz y Sofia HELP fund will initially provide life-sustaining ("densely nutritious") groceries, monthly bill payments, gas, and medical visits/treatments (long-term) for ~6 months.

CURRENT NEEDS:
Current monthly budget, e.g., recurring household expenses, food, etc. = ~$5,000.

Financial Support:
  • Food: densely nutritious food, as required by Beatriz’ treatment plan.
  • Utilities
  • Mortgage Assistance: Her mortgage was covered for a while via a forbearance program, which has now ended.
  • Medical Treatment: Specialists who treat FQAD are based in California, Minnesota, the UK and Germany – with fees ranging from $10,000-$30,000 + travel. Health insurance companies do not cover these costs, so this would all be out-of-pocket for Beatriz. She has no funds for this type of treatment.

Financial Support for and/or In-Kind Assistance:
  • Personal/Household cleaning items: paper products, dish scrubbers, hand soap, laundry detergent, body wash, shampoo, etc.
  • Nutritional supplements (vital) – the glue that is holding Beatriz together. This is an out-of-pocket cost despite being recommended by her physician.
  • Dishwasher: Since Beatriz only has 3-4 hours a day with mobility, she must decide which task she can tackle each day. Their dishwasher has been broken for 3.5 years.
  • Dryer: Beatriz and Sofia have been drying clothes on a rack for 3 years.
  • Gardening services/work party: The weeds around her house are 4-5’ high; an old swing set needs to be removed
  • Mobility/Accessibility/Medical devices: ECG machine for portable monitoring
  • Legal advice*: Estate/ Tax / Disability/ Personal injury (malpractice)
  • LinkedIn professional endorsements and/or introductions to hiring managers
  • Gift cards: Instacart / Thrive Market / Weee! / Pure Formulas / Amazing Grass / IKEA / HMart / Baiz / Trader Joe’s
  • Typical high school Graduation activities for Sofia: graduation announcements, senior photos (including a South Korean outfit), special dinner, cake
  • Auto repair/maintenance: tires, alignment, oil, filters, etc.

* Legal advice note: Being disabled does not automatically qualify a person for disability benefits. Beatriz’ physicians have been clear they do not file paperwork for disability – instead referring patients to attorneys to file claims, with the assumptions that 1) initial claims are denied, and 2) appeals take years to process. Additionally, doctors have explained (off the record) they avoid contradicting pharmaceutical companies, for liability reasons and to protect their reputation. So Beatriz does not expect to receive any assistance from state or federal programs.

Within the coming months, we'll post updates here and hopefully be able to implement "Phase 2" of Beatriz' recovery. And with our help, Beatriz can jump back onto that path of re-becoming her bright, vibrant, optimistic, healthy, engaging, confident, amazing, generous self.

Thank you for your consideration, friends. Any donations, and even kind thoughts, will make a huge difference for Beatriz y Sofia. Many of you reading this have (probably) already helped through other means. Please know your generosity has helped and will help immensely.
