Beatrix Cancer Support Fund
Donation protected
Beatrix is my sweet and sassy 9-year old Berner, who most of you know as one half of Beatrix & Midge (and now 1/3 of Beatrix, Midge & Buster). The bad news is, Beatrix has bone cancer in her front leg. The good news is, we caught it very early and an ultrasound and x-rays have shown that it hasn’t spread yet. The bad news is, her leg must be amputated in order to stop the spread. The good news is, if anyone can get through that with a smile on her face, it’s Bea!
Bea’s leg is very sore, but otherwise she’s her happy old self. Her surgery is scheduled for September 18th, and chemotherapy will begin after amputation. Then on to physical therapy! I’ll keep you all posted every step of the way.
Since posting about Beatrix’s cancer diagnosis, so many of you have asked if you could contribute towards her care. My instinct had been not to, since I do have pet insurance which covers a good portion of the cancer-related treatment, after deductible. However, since April I have had a lot of vet bills not covered by insurance, including dental cleaning and extractions for both Bea and Midge, as well as Buster’s neuter. These expenses were expected, but what was unexpected was having so little work right now—I am a professional illustrator and almost all of the jobs I had lined up for the spring & summer vanished with the Covid-19 slowdown. There will also be physical therapy required for Bea after her surgery, which isn’t covered by my insurance. The truth is, I could use a bit of help, if you would like to contribute a small amount. The fund is for $5000 because I had to select an amount, and that’s how much I will have paid out that isn’t covered by insurance. Of course I don’t expect that to all be covered by others, but if even a small part of it is, that’s a huge help. Your offers to donate are very much appreciated, I can’t tell you how much it means that you all love my crazy roommates so much! Thank you, so very much, from all of us.
Fortunately we have a great setup here to support her through this—my little house can be fenced off so she doesn’t have to go up and down stairs, and there are two houses on this lot, with family members living in the other house, so there are lots of us here who are happy to take care of her. I am a self-employed artist and work from home, so someone will always be with her as she recovers. Our family adopted a young dog many years ago who had just had a front leg amputated, so we have gone through this before, and watched in amazement at how quickly he got used to it. Bea is 9 years old, but she is fit and strong, and still has lots of energy. I have no doubt she will be up and around in no time.
Thank you again for all of the support. I will post regular updates on her progress, and of course will be posting lots of Buster & Midge antics on Instagram as well. Onward!
