Beating Cancer: Lori's Story

Our Backstory:

First, I would like to say that if you have made it to this page, thank you for taking the time to read about my mom, Lori's journey. For those of you fortunate enough to know my mom, you know that she puts others ahead of herself, and would break her back to help someone out. However, as willing as she is to help others in their time of need, she would never ask for help when she herself needs it; because of this I am asking for her.

My mom and I have always had an incredibly close relationship, after all, it has been just the two of us for 13 years. My mom and I have gone through many tough journeys together,  none more notable than in 2010 when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. While that diagnosis would have broken many people's spirits, my mom took that diagnosis in stride. Throughout the course of chemotherapy, surgeries, and her illness, my mom never allowed it to keep her down. She sailed through all of this with relative ease, in fact, we always joked that she had "cancer light". We should have known that it would not be that easy...

It has been eight years since her first battle with breast cancer. During those years, my mom had to take pills to lower her estrogen levels. These pills caused five additional years of menopause symptoms. Overall, however, she was healthy and we thought we were through the worst of it. Fast forward to this year, and my mom began to experience leg pain that would not go away. I told her it was a muscle strain and that it would take longer to heal because she was getting older. Shortly after her leg pain, my mom began to experience shortness of breath. It was at this time that I realized she was truly sick.

Fast forward a month or two, several doctor's appointments, a CT scan, a thoracentesis (to drain fluid from her lungs), and a major surgery later, our worst fear was confirmed: my mom again had breast cancer. This news was the bad news we had feared was a possibility. However, the good news was that there are drugs that could control the cancer long term.

Here is where we need your help!

If the good news is that there are drugs to control the cancer; more bad news is that these drugs cost thousands of dollars a month, even after insurance. For one year of these life saving medications, the cost to my mom is $20,800. This cost is not even inclusive of all of her medications, only the priciest ones. This cost is astronomical and obviously not something my mom is able to afford on her own. My hope is that this cause may reach people far and wide, even those who do not know my mom, who have big hearts. For those of you who do know my mom, you know how much of a giver she is. My mom would do anything for other people; nothing highlights this selflessness better than when she took in a homeless couple and provided them with a home for several months.

I am now calling on all of you to help my mom in any way that you can. I know that this is a lofty goal, however, every little bit of money raised helps. My mom will need to remain on these medications for the rest of her life, and has a long battle ahead of her. Any amount donated is truly appreciated by both my mom and myself. We are so grateful to have such a strong and loving support system, and know that together we will find a way through this challenge.
