I'd like to introduce you to Charise. Charise is a brilliant, hard-working and independent young woman. At 32 years of age, she has already accomplished great things. She worked incredibly hard to put herself through two university degrees, graduating in 2018 as the Valedictorian of our physiotherapy class. Since graduation, Charise has been providing physiotherapy services to some of Australia's most disadvantaged and isolated communities.
On New Year's Eve 2019, Charise received a devastating report: she has a very malignant, invasive tumour in her bladder that has extended to her lymph and vascular system.
The last part of that statement is the scariest: cancer that has already spread to her lymph system means that it already may be affecting surrounding organs - namely her uterus - and has the potential to travel throughout her entire body.
According to her urologists, the recommended treatment may include complete bladder removal surgery within 6-8 weeks (by the end of February 2020) to prevent the cancer from spreading.
However, her situation is complicated in that her uterus might have to be removed as well. Therefore, it has been recommended to Charise to freeze her eggs in order to preserve her fertility.
Charise recently moved to Darwin, Australia with no family and only new friends nearby. She will need to travel home to Canada for her surgery. This means she will be off work for the time being. Unfortunately, she has not built up enough vacation or personal leave.
The funds raised through this campaign are urgently needed.
Charise will use these funds to:
- book last-minute flights from Darwin, Australia to Vancouver, Canada (approx. $2,000)
- undergo the expensive egg freezing process in order to preserve her fertility (approx. $13,000)
- support her during her 6-week recovery from this significant surgery in Canada (approx. $3,000)
- assist her return trip to Australia (approx. $2,000)
