Welcome Collin, the Blanding’s Turtle that traveled to Michigan from Fort Collins, Colorado as the first animal ambassador at the Huron County Nature Center (HCNC), Port Austin, Michigan. The Northern Colorado Wildlife Rescue received Collin at their center with an eye injury and a shell that had been wired together following an injury. It was a perplexing find for them as Blanding’s Turtles are native to the Great Lakes. The staff at the wildlife rescue reviewed Collin's health and injuries and decided he would be unable to be released to the wild. Their search for a new “home” was underway! After seeing the Wildlife Rescue’s post online, a member of the HCNC contacted that group and offered a home within Collin’s natural territory. Collin arrived in Michigan by an overnight trip with FedEx. The team at the Nature Center is providing him with an enclosure other turtles will envy. This is where help is needed -- the goal of $2,000 will allow the team at the Nature Center to provide him with a 180-gallon tank in their visitor center. This tank will give him plenty of space and an environment as close to his natural habitat as possible. The Nature Center cannot wait to share Collin with you. He loves people and back scratches, along with tricking his caretakers into multiple meals a day! And, his name reflects the beginning of his journey from Fort Collins! The HCNC is a volunteer-managed, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that depends on the generous donations of supporters life you.
