Be the light to fight Leukemia with Evelyn

Evelyn Barrial Schleffer is a fighter, currently facing the most challenging time of her life. She is a mother of three, loves her family, loves to dance, and loves life. She may arrive late to just about every function, but when she does you know there will be plenty laughter to follow. Evelyn has been a part of the Brevard County community for 43 years. If you have had the pleasure of meeting Evelyn you know what a big heart she has and that she is always the first person to lend a helping hand. Evelyn has worked in the community organizing school fundraising events with all 3 of her children. Her latest tenure with Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce fills her heart with joy and she absolutely loves her job.

Evelyn was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. Her treatment plan will include trials, chemotherapy, testing, bone marrow biopsies, prolonged hospital stays, among many other possible treatments so that Evelyn can finally receive a bone marrow transplant. After receiving a transplant, Evelyn will need to live within 30 minutes of Moffitt Cancer Hospital in Tampa for 90 days with 24/7 care at her own expense.

Evelyn’s ONE AND ONLY cure is to have a bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant).

Once Evelyn is ready to receive a bone marrow transplant AND the hospital has found a perfect donor match, she will have to go through an additional round of chemo before receiving the transplant. This will be another very prolonged stay at the hospital (30+ days) making sure that the transplant goes smoothly. Giving her the necessary blood products as needed, many more bone marrow biopsy’s, and most importantly, making sure her body is accepting the donors bone marrow - this will include closely monitoring her counts to rise in her body naturally to a safe and healthy values. After her counts come back up and the team feels confident in how her body accepting the transplant - she then, will be sent home where she will be somewhat isolated for 30 to 90 days, giving her body all the rest and time it’s needs to heal completed and to be finally cured. She will be taking many anti-rejection meds and other very important meds as well post-transplant.

Evelyn's diagnosis is complicated and challenging, with 16 out of 20 chromosomes showing some type of mutation deficiency. This makes her a high-risk case that requires a complex treatment plan. However, Evelyn is well-informed about her condition, treatment options and she has a supportive family who will be tested to see if they can be potential donors for her bone marrow transplant. With the right support and care, we believe Evelyn can beat this disease and live a long and healthy life.

AML is one of the most expensive treatments for cancer today. Cost for AML treatment can range from $100K-$300K. While Evelyn does carry health insurance, only a portion of her treatment will be covered. All funds raised will go towards Evelyn’s treatment and out-of-pocket expenses associated with her care during and after treatment.

We invite you to join us in supporting Evelyn by making a donation to our fundraising campaign. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to help Evelyn with her medical and out-of-pocket expenses so that she can focus on treatment and recovery. Every dollar will help her along this journey and make a difference in her fight
