My mother, Irene, was tragically diagnosed with ALS about 6 months ago. While she is a private person and has kept this diagnosis quiet, it is sadly progressing. For those of you who are not familiar, ALS destroys the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control the muscles that perform basic functions. These muscles weaken and waste away having devastating affects on a person’s ability to move, speak, swallow and breathe. There is no cure.
Being fiercely independent her entire life, my mother has made very few requests of anyone throughout this battle. I, however, am witnessing firsthand the effects of this debilitating disease. My once vibrant mother, who enjoyed a life devoted to her husband Robert, family and service, is gradually becoming trapped in the prison of her own body. This degenerative disease has already mercilessly taken away her ability to take care of her own most basic needs.
My courageous mother, who has already had to grieve the loss of two sons, Stanley “Bo Bo” Armstrong and Tyrone Armstrong, is now faced with a relentless battle with her own terminal condition. Unfortunately, insurance will not cover the many home modifications, including a stairlift and assistive devices, that she urgently needs for her safety and to improve her quality of life. I am now reaching out to you, her family, friends and the community, for any support you can give.
While it is extremely difficult to face the reality of what is to come and the obstacles are great, my faith is greater. Thank you in advance for any support you may give. No donation is too small. If you are unable to donate, please share this campaign with others.
